The tundra is warming more rapidly than any other biome on Earth, and the potential ramifications are far-reaching because of global feedback effects between vegetation and climate. A better understanding of how environmental factors shape plant structure and function is crucial for predicting the consequences of environmental change for ecosystem functioning. Here we explore the biome-wide relationships between temperature, moisture and seven key plant functional traits both across space and over three decades of warming at 117 tundra locations. Spatial temperature-trait relationships were generally strong but soil moisture had a marked influence on the strength and direction of these relationships, highlighting the potentially important influence of changes in water availability on future trait shifts in tundra plant communities. RESUMO: O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar aspectos epidemiológicos e tendência temporal da hanseníase, no município de Fortaleza, Ceará, de 2001 a 2012. Foram registrados 9.658 casos novos cuja tendência foi analisada pelo modelo de regressão do joinpoint . O coeficiente de detecção geral apresentou tendência decrescente, com annual percent change (APC) de -4,0 e intervalo de confiança de 95% (IC95%) -5,6 - -2,3. O coeficiente de detecção em menores de 15 anos de idade (APC = -1,4; IC95% -5,4 - 2,8) e o coeficiente de detecção de grau 2 de incapacidade (APC = -0,8; IC95% -4,5 - 3,1) foram estáveis. In the last few decades, cities around the world have seen significant urbanization marked by the increase conversion of natural landscape into anthropogenic structures resulting in change of local atmosphere concomitant with elevated land surface temperature compared to the surrounding open areas. Elevated temperature phenomenon widely known as Urban Heat Island (UHI) became an area of concern for Urban Designers and Planners as the communities living in urban areas got affected by increased temperature bringing the notion of comfort at risk. The UHI has been the subject of intensive research in various countries including India since the 2000s. Computer application has assisted researchers in generating thermal image of an area by linking urban database with the simulation tools which provides detailed analysis of impact of anthropogenic activity on urban climate. This paper carries out a literature review of the UHI studies conducted in last two decades in different cities of India with main focus on description of reasons for UHI formation and also to trace the transition of UHI mapping approach from manual, mobile observatory to computer aided images.

Despite its vast natural and human resource endowment couple with substantial oil revenue, Nigeria was rated one of the poorest country on the planet. With the return to democratic governance in 1999, the issue of poverty had continued to pose threat to the nation's socioeconomic development thereby drastically increasing the vulnerability of Nigerians to the scourge of extreme poverty. The paper evaluates various government policies targeted towards poverty eradication with a view to come up with policy recommendations for effective and efficient implementation of such programmes. After elimination of the Aedes aegypti vector in South America in the 1960s, dengue outbreaks started to reoccur during the 1990s; strongly in Argentina since 1998. In 2016, Córdoba City had the largest dengue outbreak in its history. In this article we report this outbreak including spatio-temporal analysis of cases and vectors in the city. A total of 653 dengue cases were recorded by the laboratory-based dengue surveillance system and georeferenced by their residential addresses. Case maps were generated from the epidemiological week 1 (beginning of January) to week 19 (mid-May). Coccidioidomycosis (CM) is a disease of major public health importance due to the challenges in its diagnosis and treatment. In our study bioclimatic variables calculated from long-term temperature and precipitation data (1960-1990) were applied in order to define climatic surfaces and climatic envelope of significant woody habitat types in three vegetation-based hilly landscape of South Transdanubia (Belső-Somogy, Külső-Somogy, Zselic). Certain differencies can be observed in the climatic surface of the regions. Külső-Somogy is the most extreme region by all the bioclimatic indeces, Zselic is the most balanced by precipitation and Belső-Somogy is similar by the temperature indeces. Climatic envelopes of main woody habitat types (J – riverine and swamp woodlands, K – mesic deciduous woodlands, L – dry closed deciduous woodlands, R – other tree dominated habitats) are considerably overlapping by the selected bioclimatic variables. The prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in surface water in Lebanon is a growing concern and understanding the mechanisms of the spread of resistance determinants is essential. We aimed at studying the occurrence of resistant bacteria and determinants in surface water sources in Lebanon and understanding their mobilization and transmission. Water samples were collected from five major rivers in Lebanon. A total of 91 isolates were recovered by incubating at 37°C on Blood and MacConkey agar out of which 25 were multi-drug resistant (MDR) and accordingly were further characterized. In areas of seasonal malaria transmission, the incidence rate of malaria infection is presumed to be near zero at the end of the dry season. Asymptomatic individuals may constitute a major parasite reservoir during this time. We conducted a longitudinal analysis of the spatio-temporal distribution of clinical malaria and asymptomatic parasitemia over time in a Malian town to highlight these malaria transmission dynamics. For a cohort of 300 rural children followed over 2009-2014, periodicity and phase shift between malaria and rainfall were determined by spectral analysis. Spatial risk clusters of clinical episodes or carriage were identified. A nested-case-control study was conducted to assess the parasite carriage factors. Malaria infection persisted over the entire year with seasonal peaks. High transmission periods began 2-3 months after the rains began. Brazil is the second nation in absolute number of new cases of leprosy in the world. The country presents many regions highly endemic to the disease, as is the case of the Goiás. The present study aims to analyze the temporal trends of leprosy indicators in Goiás between 2006 and 2015. This study showed a significant trend of decline for the coefficient of detection. Although the central-western region of the state presented the highest absolute number of cases, the Northeast of the state presents the worst epidemiological situation, with an increase in the number of cases of patients with physical disabilities and those under 14 years of age. In this paper, we examine the impact of gender, mode of admission, parental higher institutional status, family home status and campus residential status on students’ level of academic performance using the concept and application of multinomial logistic regression model. The statistical analysis is carried out on a random sampling of 289 students from all the schools/faculty in FUTA. Information required for the analysis was obtained through the administration of questionnaire to answer the research questions and thereafter applied chi–square and multinomial logistic regression methodology was employed. The result showed that, gender and mode of admission significantly affect the level of performance and that more male student are more likely to have a high performance compared to the female counterpart. Also students who reside on campus tend to have a high performance compared to those who reside off campus.

Autophagy, a conserved eukaryotic lysosomal degradation pathway that responds to environmental and cellular cues, is regulated by multiple signaling pathways that oversee cell survival, growth, and proliferation. In budding yeast, autophagy plays an essential role in meiotic exit, although the molecular mechanisms underlying its regulation and cargo selection remain unknown. In this study, we found that autophagy is maintained during meiosis and is upregulated at anaphase I and anaphase II. In addition, we found that cells with higher levels of autophagy during meiosis I and II completed meiosis faster, and that genetically activated autophagy machinery increased sporulation efficiency. Bluetongue is an arthropod-borne viral infection that is notifiable in several countries and causes significant economic losses and major concerns for ruminant trade. In this study, we investigated bluetongue 1seroprevalence in the Campania region, southern Italy, in cattle and buffalo populations, and assessed which factors were correlated with a high risk of exposure. The infection was widespread, as evidenced by the high individual (43.6%) and herd prevalence (85.4%). The highest prevalence was found in adult animals. Among the climatic factors analyzed, average temperature played a prominent role, being capable of affecting the probability of being positive for this infection. Surprisingly, exposure to Schmallenberg virus did not predispose animals to be positive for bluetongue virus, even though these infections share the same vector (Culicoides). Background Network motifs provided a “conceptual tool” for understanding the functional principles of biological networks, but such motifs have primarily been used to consider static network structures. Static networks, however, cannot be used to reveal time- and region-specific traits of biological systems. To overcome this limitation, we proposed the concept of a “spatiotemporal network motif,” a spatiotemporal sequence of network motifs of sub-networks which are active only at specific time points and body parts. Using passive malaria surveillance data collected from 2006 to 2011 through the Zambian District Health Information System, the associations between increased coverage with LLINs and IRS and the burden of malaria in Zambia were evaluated. Projected climate change at a regional level is expected to shift vegetation habitat distributions over the next century. For the sub-alpine species whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis), warming temperatures may indirectly result in loss of suitable bioclimatic habitat, reducing its distribution within its historic range. The aim of this study was to determinate the content of some elements in a specific dairy product, mozzarella, in a particular area of western Slovakia and to evaluate the estimation of the risk to the consumers based on the contribution to the provisional tolerable weekly intake. The consumption of mozzarella can contribute to the intake of important elements in the diet, such as calcium and magnesium, along with others. The contents of some toxic and trace elements were low and have not exceeded the permitted limit. In addition, the contribution to PTWI was found to be very low, which means that the consumption of mozzarella possesses no risk to humans. It is concluded that the data obtained in this study can help as a valuable addition to methodological and scientific material in the field of food safety of dairy products and their positive impact on human health.

The present study is an evaluation of temporal/spatial variations of surface water quality using multivariate statistical techniques, comprising cluster analysis (CA), principal component analysis (PCA), factor analysis (FA) and discriminant analysis (DA). Eleven water quality parameters were monitored at 38 different sites in Can Tho City, a Mekong Delta area of Vietnam from 2008 to 2012. Hierarchical cluster analysis grouped the 38 sampling sites into three clusters, representing mixed urban-rural areas, agricultural areas and industrial zone. FA/PCA resulted in three latent factors for the entire research location, three for cluster 1, four for cluster 2, and four for cluster 3 explaining 60, 60.2, 80.9, and 70 % of the total variance in the respective water quality. An area has been designated for demonstrating the utility of marine hydrokinetic turbines in Minas Passage, Bay of Fundy. Marine renewable energy may be useful for the transition from carbon-based energy sources, but there is concern for the safety of fish that might encounter turbines. Acoustic receivers that detect signals from acoustically tagged fish that pass through the tidal demonstration area and the detection efficiency of tag signals might be used to estimate the likelihood of fish encountering marine hydrokinetic turbines. The method requires that tagged fish passing through the development area will be reliably detected by a receiver array.
