Roland Barthes

A discussion panel devoted to archives and archivists with the participation of classics of postmodernism is a joke prepared on the occasion of Archivist Day.. Umberto Eco, Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Zygmunt Bauman, Roland Barthes, Jean Baudrillard and Marshall McLuhan never met at a symposium on archival science. At least in mortal life. But if such a discussion panel devoted to archives and archivists were to take place, the following statements could be made by them, showing the trends in which global archival science has been developing over the last decades. We will also find there echoes of probably all "post-modern", or even "post-post-modern", ideas emerging and existing in Polish archival science.

This thesis investigates the phenomenon of Artist Residencies, in Southern Europe, and precisely Greece, Italy, and Spain, looking for the conditions in which artist residencies in that area can function as examples of alternative models of cultural production and sustainable long term relationships of care. Arts residencies’ practices have been traditionally
linked with the image of the nomad genius artist who goes for a certain amount of time to a different place than the one they are based in, in search for inspiration and experimentation away from the busy urban metropoles. However, the phenomenon has proliferated since the
1990s, to the point where it is now considered an essential piece in an artist’s cv. Additionally, other than just another form of cultural production, artist residencies have often looked as places which exist slightly on the margins of the productivist needs of the arts market, showing possibilities of building long-term relationships between guest, host, and the surrounding community. More recently, they have also been linked with questions of regenerative and ecologically sustainable, socially critical, and alternative organizational models. At the same time, it still remains a phenomenon which has been scarcely studied and documented, possibly also due to the multiplicity of models that artist residencies can take.

For the purposes of this thesis, the context is narrowed down to the geographical area of Southern Europe and the socio-political and economical context of the Mediterranean. Starting off from the hypothesis that living and creating in the Mediterranean culture does not have a singular meaning and understanding, the thesis attempts to depict all the different characteristics of artist residencies in this area. Following an analysis of TransArtists’ database of artist residencies in Greece, Italy, and Spain, next to their cultural policy frameworks and funding guides, it is understood that even if these countries share some common cultural
elements, the artist residencies are placed very differently within their frameworks. From no recognition and support(Greece), to sometimes and in some cases(Italy), to more often, but not always successfully(Spain). Additionally, after the conduction of interviews with cultural professionals in this area, 3 case studies are selected(CeRCCa, DEO Projects, Onassis AiR), which all represent interesting organizational models and points of discussion, which are then placed on a SWOT analysis for each of them. Finally, a more practical toolkit is designed, aimed at artist residency hosts in the Mediterranean and any issues they might come up against in any step of organizing an artist residency.

Cet article focalise l’attention sur la sémiotique plastique et, plus particulièrement, sur la schématisation semi-symbolique, c’est-à-dire sur la corrélation entre des catégories du plan de l’expression et du plan du contenu, pour en montrer tout l’intérêt et inviter à son dépassement. Mettant les hypothèses à l’épreuve de tableaux de Georges Laurent, nous visons à établir des filiations à partir des travaux des pionniers de la sémiotique visuelle, surtout de Floch, de Greimas et de Thürlemann, afin de souligner le fait que certains développements de la sémiotique visuelle contemporaine (focalisation sur la matérialité du tableau, sur sa texture et sur son support, analyse tensive de la catégorie, approche dynamiciste des processus sémiosiques et pensée de la variation) s’autorisent directement des avancées considérables réalisées dans les années soixante-dix à quatre-vingt-dix, mais aussi réexaminent les bases qui ont été jetées.  

Le cinquième tome du Carnet de notes de Pierre Bergounioux, couvre les années 2016 à 2020. Les dernières lignes de décembre 2015 envoyées à son éditrice chez Verdier, le diariste obstiné reprend « le crayon » le jour de l’an pour continuer à « garder trace du temps », tâche qu’il s’est imposée en 1980 et dont depuis il s’est acquitté sans interruption. Rien d’exceptionnel à noter le quotidien pour lutter contre l’oubli, mais pour Pierre Bergounioux l’enjeu est plus spécifique, ses contraintes sont rigoureuses, le résultat − quarante ans de vie évoqués au jour le jour en près de 5600 pages − est vertigineux.

As the title says, the work is an analysis of the Marquis' view of society at the time. It is unique in that it examines, among other things, the relationship between "lord and god" and "lord and king" on the basis of published literature:

The article follows the thread of Roland Barthes' readings of Proust, starting with the publication of a volume that brings together the main documents (Roland Barthes-Proust. Mélanges, edited by Bernard Comment, 2020). It is mainly a question of the relationship between Life and Work, one of the topos of Proust's mythology and a theme that deeply intrigued Barthes himself. Much of Proust's reception, even today, is very much marked by a crushing between the two, and by a series of clichés. Barthes does not simply reject them, but on the one hand questions the public reasons for their success, and on the other hand is in turn, but in a much more sophisticated and theoretical way, captured by them.

Antonio Pizzolante (1958 -), esordiente, negli anni Settanta, nell’ambito della pittura figurativa di matrice neoespressionista, approda successivamente alla scultura, declinata dapprima secondo vigorose modalità materiche e indirizzata, poi, verso soluzioni installative lineari, archetipiche, primarie, minimaliste. Centrale, nell’ultima fase della sua ricerca, di cui le opere esposte e pubblicate fanno parte, è il rapporto dialogico tra la forma e lo spazio (reale e illusorio, tangibile ed evocato), a creare o a enfatizzare pieni e vuoti, concavità e convessità, orizzontalità e verticalità, che veicolano una riflessione su presenza e assenza, realtà e metafora, identità e storia. Il rimando, costante, alle culture dell’antico Mediterraneo, già baricentro della produzione degli anni Ottanta e ribadito nei cicli delle Porte, dei Portali e delle Dimore, trova ulteriore sviluppo con il tramite di un’attenta indagine sull’antropologia dei materiali (legno, ferro, metallo, pietra, carta).
L’esito è un rinnovato interesse per forme minimali, colori monocromi, che paiono corrosi e consunti dal tempo, sequenze ritmiche di superfici scabre, d’innesti e cesure che acquisiscono pregnanza semantica attraverso il legame con l’ambiente e la sua architettura: una relazione vivificante che vede il contesto diventare parte integrante del manufatto e cassa di risonanza della sua esplicazione di senso, significato e significanza.
Variegate le suggestioni e i modelli evocati, che spaziano dall’Informale all’Arte povera e al Minimalismo, con una forte proiezione, in ambito italiano, verso la poetica di capiscuola come Fausto Melotti, Giuseppe Uncini, Nicola Carrino ed Ettore Spalletti, cui si somma lo sguardo rivolto a protagonisti della scena internazionale: da Anselm Kiefer ad Anish Kapoor, da David Tremlett a Donald Judd, da Larry Bell a Carl Andre. Nella marcata essenzialità delle forme, poi, l’artista non manca di evocare anche mondi lontani, come quello nipponico, omaggiato con il tramite di raffinate traduzioni plastico-rituali delle atmosfere zen e mediante sofisticate allusioni letterarie haiku. Proprio questo ultimo aspetto, che funge da fil rouge della mostra, ha avuto un grandioso impatto, nella declinazione dell’ukiyo-e, sullo sviluppo dell’arte contemporanea occidentale ed è stato definito da Roland Barthes, ne L’impero dei Segni: «una poetica di vuoti, non di pieni, una poetica di silenzi, una fragile essenza dell'apparire».

The study focuses on three narratives as they unfold within the academy and contextualize academic trauma. The first examines the manifestations of the classical social science structural-agency dilemma in the university setting. The second reveals the mechanisms of balancing between the objectivity demanded of the academicians and their inherent subjectivity, in the suppression of which trauma is highlighted. The third theme, built around R. Barthes’ model of idiorrhythmia, offers a theoretical understanding of the academy as a social aggregate that attempts to harmonize individual and collective experience. The lines of argument are combined into a single theoretical model, focusing on different aspects of the manifestation of the same phenomenon — trauma. The present essay brings multiple cultural constructions of performative maternity to bear upon a reading of Mary Wroth’s Love’s Victory, in order to consider how a female-authored dramatic romance can utilize the language of maternity not so much to dislocate the authority of the patriarch so repeatedly reinscribed by male-authored romances, as to redraw the boundaries of romance narrative that frame the patriarch’s power. By viewing Love’s Victory through the lens not only of male-authored romance traditions, but also of other female-authored constructions of maternity, from mothers’ advice books by Elizabeth Grymeston and Dorothy Leigh to Elizabeth Cary’s The Tragedy of Mariam, I examine what happens when the “forcible love” associated with “playing the mother’s part” in early modern romance becomes a matter for others than solely mothers.

My projected biofiction series, Shakespeare's Sisters, comprises six interrelated historical novels that convey the stories of early modern women authors from their own perspectives. As epitomized by the first of these, Imperfect Alchemist, the series offers imaginative engagements with an array of early modern figures, with women writers at the center of the narrative. This essay explores how biofiction can differ from biography in imagining and making visible both individual convictions and strategies of authorship that worked to challenge and transform popular assumptions about gender in another era. My essay considers how authors of biofiction can explore challenges and expectations facing early modern women that resonate with modern audiences.

El estudio de los materiales heterogéneos que conforman el archivo en continua expansión de Mario Bellatin, depositados en guarda en la Universidad Nacional de La Plata, ha permitido abrir una reflexión novedosa acerca del proceso creativo del escritor, que tiene como principal operación de escritura la reutilización del propio archivo (en el que se conservan tanto manuscritos de sus libros como cuadernos de juventud, ejercicios de máquina de escribir, correos electrónicos, posteos y fotografías). A partir de una serie de fotografías de parques que Bellatin realizó en el año 2008, este ensayo propone algunas hipótesis sobre la práctica de "hacer archivo" y, en particular, una reflexión acerca de cómo esta práctica habilita, por lo bajo, la invención de nuevos modos de estar en común.

Este artigo tem como objetivo retomar a discussão em torno do aparecimento-desaparecimento da função autor, propondo uma articulação entre essa problemática e a questão moderna do surgimento do homem. Conforme Foucault, o homem como sujeito do conhecimento e objeto do saber é uma invenção recente na história do Ocidente, cujo aparecimento remete ao distanciamento arqueológico entre as palavras e as coisas. Atravessado pela categoria da história, o ser torna-se aquilo que precisa ser pensado, e isso com base em uma nova composição entre os símbolos e a interpretação. El artículo recupera una serie de crónicas de José Martí centradas en diferentes personalidades de la cultura del fin de siècle, que se destacaron por su oratoria. El objetivo es repensar la figura martiana en el entramado de estas dos prácticas discursiva: la crónica y la oratoria. De esta manera, indagaremos cómo el enunciador analiza, define y destaca a los oradores de su época, en tanto que él mismo se posiciona y se perfila como uno de ellos, creando así una suerte de galería personal inscripta en diferentes medios, por lo general, de Latinoamérica.

Este artículo rastrea la importancia de las catálisis, tal y como las formula Roland Barthes (1968), para asignar valor a los detalles en la descripción en las narrativas. Partimos de su hipótesis según la cual lo aparentemente insignificante del relato es lo que produce el efecto de realidad y proponemos pensar las series televisivas contemporáneas desde lo aparentemente inútil en el relato. Para ello, analizamos desde una perspectiva semiótica cuatro casos de estudio paradigmáticos que se han distanciado de los mecanismos convencionales de enganche y espectáculo y han apostado formalmente por la sutileza y la atención al detalle: la dialogada En terapia (In Treatment, Hagai Levi, Rodrigo García, HBO: 2008-2010), la hiperestilizada Mad Men (Matthew Weiner, AMC: 2007-2015), la irreverente Breaking Bad (Vince Gilligan, AMC: 2008-2013) y la siniestra True Detective (HBO: 2014-). En esta formulación, el género es visible de inmediato.

Este artículo ofrece una propuesta teórico-metodológica de análisis de discurso de raíz foucaultiana, particularmente orientada a estudiar los discursos polémicos que caracterizan, sobre todo, a ciertos procesos parlamentarios y la controversia que invisten las normativas ambientales. Parte de un trabajo previo de análisis de las estrategias discursivas implicadas en la legislación sobre protección ambiental de los bosques nativos en Argentina y en la provincia de Córdoba, entre los años 2006 y 2017. A diferencia de diversos estudios de tipo institucionalista, interpretativista o del pragmatismo que priman en el ámbito de indagación sobre los procesos deliberativos, la apuesta aquí es rescatar el juego de estrategias discursivas que los configura, echando mano de un conjunto de categorías como las de campo discursivo, enunciado, polémica, discurso, tácticas y estrategias y modalidades enunciativas. Asimismo, el escrito ofrece claves metodológicas que recuperan el valor heurístico de las mencionadas categorías. En definitiva, se pone a disposición una alternativa para cualquier tipo de estudio que aspire a atender las dimensiones de lucha y enfrentamiento que son condición y efecto de los discursos y los debates públicos

The paper assesses the positive aspects of power in Wide Sargasso
Sea by Jean Rhys. It addresses the circular nature of power, leading to a goal that conveys the power that a circular model involves which is more proficient and sustainable. Since, Jean Rhys, the author, is a white-skinned-creole who faced problems with her national, regional, and sexual identities, the topic of identity as a component of power is explored in this novel. As no relationship develops in isolation it should be examined within the context of knowledge; the study makes a connection between power and knowledge. However, power’s dimensions have provided silenced and marginalised communities a voice and Rhys’ concept of positive power remains vital for both modern political discourse and political inclusion, solidarity, and resistance. The paper discusses decolonizing knowledge as a tool of power, and the power of solitude and freedom to achieve positive power goals which describe freedom and bondage as tools of power.

El presente artículo tiene como objetivo analizar el cine como medio de expresión y representación de un determinado contexto sócio-histórico y como herramienta pedagógica en la formación de sujetos críticos y activos en su contexto social. En primer lugar, se ha analizado la representación de la adolescencia en las películas Kids y Ken Park de Larry Clark, a través del análisis semiótico del film. Posteriormente, se han contrastado las divergencias o coincidencias entre la representación de la adolescencia norteamericana en el cine y los datos encontrados en los estudios científicos sobre la misma. De manera general se puede concluir que: 1) el cine es un vehículo de comunicación, influencia y re-presentación sociocultural y como tal está condicionado por su entorno y reflejará elementos significativos de su época. 2) la función social del cine le convierte en una excelente herramienta pedagógica en la educación del pensamiento crítico, y sujetos activos en el acto de ver, pensar, ...

Marcel Proust commence la rédaction de la Recherche après la disparition de ses géniteurs. Son état de santé qui se détériore l’amène à rester enfermé dans sa chambre pour la rédaction de son livre majeur : À la recherche du temps perdu, une œuvre à grande portée psychologique. Le trajet parcouru pour atteindre cette finalité traduit un chronotope à grande échelle. À l’aide de la théorie de la perception et de la narratologie rabatelienne, l’on déterminera comment Proust use du sédentarisme au niveau narratif pour transporter le lecteur dans un voyage aussi long tel que présenté par la Recherche.

This article discusses aspects of interactions between image and frame in the context of medieval devotional images. In the later Middle Ages the mimetic strategies to convey the figure's presence in the image were complemented by pieces of bones inserted into the frame. I argue that this practice belongs to a longer medieval tradition of frameworks, in which different kinds of references and types of materials were developed to turn the frame into a central site of meaning. As a depository for relics in the realm of the cult image, the frame intensified the presence of the image by counterposing its strategies of mimesis against the relic's immanent material traces. This phenomenon, however, fused what otherwise would have been distinct entities of image and relic, which was regarded as a serious problem in the context of image veneration. I show that an entirely different type of frame, one that worked with the inclusion of text, addressed precisely this problem. Here the frame addressed the artificial nature of the representation with the aim of creating distance between viewer and image.
