Islam is one of the official religions in Indonesia, with its adherents constituting the majority of the population. Muslims in Indonesia have their own values in accord with the teachings of Islam, practiced in their daily life and adapted to the culture. Historically, Islam in Indonesia, particularly in Java, was introduced through acculturation. Today’s ceremonies accompanying the implementation of Islamic teachings is an example of the daily practice that characterizes Muslims being influenced by the local culture. Moreover, in their everyday life, Muslims in Indonesia often use Islamic terminologies and Arabic words. They include greetings and expressions for starting as well as ending an activity. As for Islamic symbols, the star and the crescent on the top of the mosque dome or a Qur’anic verse put at home or in the workplace are typical representations, distinguishing the Muslims from adherents of other faiths.

This is the first in a series of sourcebooks charting the reception of Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā, d.1037) in the Islamic East (from Syria to central Asia) in the 12th-13th centuries CE. Avicenna was the dominant philosophical authority in this period, who provoked generations of thinkers to subtle critique, defense, and development of his ideas. The series will translate and analyze hundreds of passages from works by such figures as al-Ghazālī, al-Suhrawardī, Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī, Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī, and many more. This volume focuses especially on issues in metaphysics, dealing with topics like the essence-existence distinction, the problem of universals, free will and determinism, Platonic Forms, good and evil, proofs of God’s existence, and the relationship between philosophy and theology.

How can a post-Christian, secular audience understand the devoutly Christian, sacred music of Johann Sebastian Bach's St. Matthew Passion? This article addresses this question with reference to the hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer and Hans Blumenberg. Their confrontation reveals broad implications for the theory of humanistic interpretation at large. Gadamer celebrates Bach as a 'classical' touchstone of Western culture whom we may productively interpret through a 'fusion of horizons'. Blumenberg, by contrast, cautions that our relation to Bach's Passion is fractured because it is impossible to 'pace off the horizon'. Blumenberg emphasizes the firstperson experience of the diminution of historical meaning, a position this article calls 'shattered hermeneutics'. The article concludes that Blumenberg's interpretation of Bach and his critique of Gadamer thereby usefully and plausibly deepen and radicalize hermeneutics.

En él las autoras hacemos una reflexión de la implicación del estudio del fenómeno religioso desde la perspectiva de la socioantropología de las emociones. Damos cuenta de cómo aparece la dimensión emocional en nuestras dos diferentes investigaciones: una sobre conversión religiosa, otra sobre espiritualidad en personas en reclusión. Intentamos establecer la relación entre emociones y lo religioso-espiritual en la compresión de fenómenos macro, a partir de casos específicos. La invitación es señalar que lo emotivo es parte empírica de lo religioso; por tanto, requiere reflexionarse a niveles teóricos. Se pretende abrir el debate sobre la pertinencia, alcances y límites de nociones, conceptos, teorías y metodologías que abordan la dimensión emocional, con la intención de contribuir a un análisis más fino del fenómeno en cuestión.

De nombreux auteurs soulignent aujourd’hui la « résurgence » du mythe dans notre société contemporaine et notamment dans le domaine politique (Durand, 2002). Bien plus, les discours de type mythique commencent à gagner du terrain dans le milieu académique, comme ne manquent pas de le remarquer certains chercheurs (Rastier 2021). Or, ni la linguistique du discours ni la sémiotique ne se sont vraiment penchées sur la caractérisation des dynamiques formelles du mythe et de ses interprétations. This study utilised a context-based analysis of field observations and fifteen in-depth interviews to examine how begging is practiced by the elderly in a city in Southwestern Nigeria. As both sub-categories of beggars in the population and the larger elderly persons in the society, elderly beggars are a distinct demographic group whose needs differ from the rest of the population. Adopting a livelihood perspective as the exploratory frame, the study explains how beggary constitutes a rational response to economic, social, physiological, institutional and structural imperatives, adopted by old people as a strategy for improving their wellbeing. The study concluded that in trying to eradicate begging among elderly, the context of their emergence must be duly examined and given considerable attention in the policy process. The burning ground is both a place and a metaphor in the religion of Shaktism or goddess worship in West Bengal, India. As a place, it is where corpses are cremated. As a metaphor, it refers to the human heart, which has been left as a wasteland through sorrow and tragedy. It is when the soul loses its attachment to this world, when the heart is desolate and alone, that the dark goddess Kali descends from the heavens. She may bring the gift of salvation, bringing the soul to her paradise, or she may save it from unhappy rebirth by bringing a new and better life. She may also bring the universal consciousness that is moksha or liberation. Transcendence from the bondage of worldly attachments, which are left behind amid the ashes of the burning ground, brings divine vision and realization. This paper explores the roles of negation and desolation in ritual practice and religious experience in Bengali Shaktism.

  Maqamat adalah tingkatan seorang hamba dihadapan Allah dalam hal ibadah dan  latihan-latihan (riyaḍah) jiwa yang dilakukannya. Maqamat juga terdapat dalam kitab Salalim Al-Fuḍala karya Syekh Nawawi Al-Bantani. Keberadaan maqamat sangat penting dalam perjalanan spiritual seorang salik untuk bisa sampai kepada Allah dan menjadi kekasih-Nya. Dengan latar belakang tersebut, maka penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: 1). mengetahui konsep maqamat Syekh Nawawi al Bantani dalam kitab Salalim Al-Fuḍala; 2). mengetahui maqam-maqam yang terdapat dalam Kitab Salalim Al-Fuḍala. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan analisis deskriptif. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Syekh Nawawi Al-Bantani memahami maqamat sebagai sebuah wasiat yang harus dijaga dan diamalkan oleh seorang salik.
