Local History

This article contributes to the story of festivals and their importance to local communities in New South Wales. In September this year, a local history festival, Unlock Camden, was held in the community of Camden at the beginning of History Week. In its fifth year, the festival has aimed to unlock the stories and images of the local area and is now part of the annual Camden Festival. I acted as a tour guide for a walk around the historic Camden town centre.

The establishment of Camden, New South Wales, the town in 1840, was a private venture of James and William Macarthur, sons of colonial patriarch John Macarthur, at the Nepean River crossing on the northern edge of the family’s pastoral property of Camden Park. The town’s site was enclosed on three sides by a sweeping bend in the Nepean River and has regularly flooded the surrounding farmland and lower parts of the town.

Archaeologists produce and communicate authorized stories concerning cultural heritage and the past. Their legitimacy is based on education, scientific methods and their connection with a research community. Their position as authorized producers of history is also emphasized by TV programmes presenting archaeologists as riddle-solving detectives. The main aim of this article is to focus on the dynamics between stories communicated by archaeologists and the stories pass- ed on and communicated by members of a local community, and to discuss these. What happens when stories based on tradition and lore meet authorized stories? The latter sometimes overwrite or erase local lore and knowledge connected to features in the landscape. Some archaeological projects have, however, involved local participants and locally based knowledge. Los cambios ocurridos en el mundo de posguerra tras 1945 afectaron profundamente a la realidad cultural y política de una sociedad europea que experimentó un cambio de paradigma sobre todo a partir de la década de 1960. La juventud apareció como sujeto social y político y como vector de introducción y aceleración de los cambios sociales y culturales.

Los nuevos planteamientos derivados de la revolución cultural iniciada en los sesenta, con su punto más álgido en un políticamente fracasado 68 global tuvieron enormes repercusiones en la realidad histórica globalizada de las décadas posteriores. En el terreno cultural, la España de los últimos momentos de la dictadura y los primeros años de democracia se convirtió en uno de los ámbitos donde se hicieron presentes las tensiones y conflictos que inundaron la realidad cotidiana de las sociedades de Europa occidental. El ocio, el espacio público, el consumo cultural y la estética se convirtieron en espacios disputados en el contexto de un país en búsqueda de una modernidad que le permitiera conciliar la equiparación con el mundo occidental con la excepcionalidad de su pasado reciente. Al igual que en el resto del mundo, el componente generacional y la posición de las instituciones fueron clave para la consecución de unos cambios que afectaron profundamente a toda la realidad local del país, incluida la España rural donde más había pervivido el nacionalcatolicismo franquista.

El trabajo plantea el reto de acercarse a la historia de la Transición desde la realidad local de un pueblo manchego como el de Campo de Criptana con el objetivo de estudiar de cerca los cambios en la juventud, la mentalidad y los modos de vida en la España de la segunda mitad del siglo XX.

É bastante reconhecido que a arquitetura religiosa produzida no Brasil durante o período colonial variou conforme as especificidades dos contextos locais. Na Igreja Matriz de Divina Pastora, edifício de finais do século XVIII e tombado em 1943, quatro pinturas utilizando a técnica da “quadratura” são exemplos do desenvolvimento de associações tardias com o barroco e que ainda hoje mitos de sua criação permeiam o
imaginário local. Este trabalho apresenta resultados parciais de investigação histórico-material da Igreja Matriz de Divina Pastora, em Sergipe, obtidos por meio da documentação das características construtivas do forro policromado da nave. A partir do exercício do registro direto e indireto, a pesquisa compara os elementos de descrição
clássica, a fim de determinar, quando possível, a sua adaptação material e visual. Procura-se contribuir para o debate local sobre estes bens artísticos e ampliar a complexidade do patrimônio de Sergipe além de sua aparência, mas também das condições atuais de sua forma e estrutura.

La riqueza cultural e histórica de Hidalgo se nutre y se fundamenta en sus 84 municipios. Cada uno de ellos representa una identidad específica que surge de su entorno natural, de los idiomas que en él se hablan, de las artes tradicionales que lo identifican, de la gastronomía que representa la sabiduría que alimenta a las familias. Cada municipio tiene su historia específica, cuyas huellas están en sus monumentos, en sus documentos y en su memoria. Sus personajes destacados lo han forjado, le han dejado una herencia social y cultural por la que son recordados.
Este libro es un primera instancia para las y los tenanguenses. Será una herramienta que se aproveche en las escuelas y en las familias. Sin duda responderá a muchas preguntas y surgirán otras, de las que nacerán nuevas vocaciones dedicadas a la cultura de Tenango de Doria y del estado de Hidalgo.

This thesis examines a little-studied moment in Oklahoma’s environmental and Indigenous history: the era of the New Deal, Second World War, and early days of the Cold War. From the 1930s to the late 1940s, as Oklahoma reeled from twin economic and environmental catastrophes, local people, Native and non-Native, attempted to harness the revolutionary possibilities of the New Deal to improve their economic and ecological condition. Rising from the study of one specific area, the Cookson Hills in eastern Muskogee and western Cherokee County, this thesis examines how everyone in Oklahoma tied their future to the transformation of the land. Tying these developments to broader national trends during the New Deal, including rural land use adjustment and increasing urban federal investment, as well as the rise of an incipient national security state, this thesis argues principally for the continuity of two key themes in Oklahoma’s Native American history. Arsitektur Kolonial merupakan salah satu arsitektur yang mempunyai nilai sejarah tinggi. Bangunan kolonial banyak terdapat di kota-kota Indonesia. Karakteristik bangunan kolonial mempunyai keunikan dan bisa mengembangkan kepariwisataan. Gaya arsitektur kolonial juga diterapkan untuk membangun bangunan baru. Tujuan Penelitian adalah melakukan investigasi dengan cara pengamatan gaya arsitektur kolonial pada bangunan yang bercorak kolonial di Wonosobo. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan sampel 7 bangunan. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan beberapa bangunan mempunyai karakteristik yang sesuai dengan arsitektur kolonial, sedangkan bangunan baru tidak terlalu lengkap elemen kolonialnya.

In September – November 2021, the project team “Soviet Past: (Re)thinking of History” conducted an online-poll for school youth of 14-18 year-old under the common title “Soviet Past and Its Impact upon the Life of Contemporary Youth.” This was one of the first polls focused on the views and understandings of the youngest Ukrainian citizens.This article examines the poll results within a broader context of ongoing discussions about the impact of the Soviet past upon the life of contemporary Ukrainians and about the phenomenon of “post-Sovietness” on the territories of the former Soviet Union. Meghalaya is a very small state in the northeast India but its tradition and culture has something to inspire the rest of the country. Meghalaya is inhabited by three tribes, namely, the Khasis, the Garos and the Jaintias, but the state and its people are one of the few surviving matrilineal society. The women of these tribes enjoy more freedom and respect than the women in the rest of the country. In Meghalaya, women are considered superior than men, which is a rare culture in our country. The tribes of this state celebrates the birth of a daughter in the family because daughters are considered as an asset to the family, unlike the rest of the country where female foeticide is taking its toll and a daughter is considered as a burden for the family. Виходячи з визначеної графоаналітичним методом прабатьківщини давніх германців на території України і численною топонімією германського походження, була зроблена спроба також знати сліди германців і в антропонімії. Для цього був зроблений поверховий аналіз тих прізвищ населення Волині і Полісся, які вже на перший погляд можуть мати не українське походження. Як виявилося, що біля двох десятків прізвищ можуть германське походження мати.

Kawasan Papua telah mengalami konflik sosial dan politik antara masyarakat lokal dan pemerintahan Indonesia. Namun, sejumlah LSM telah mengajukan gagasan bahwa musik Papua memiliki signifikansi untuk upaya pertahanan perdamaian lokal. Artikel ini menganalisis peran gagasan yang sama berdasarkan pengertian Foucaultian mengenai musik bersama sebuah teori middle-range yang berbasis CRT menyangkut rasisme struktural. Analisisnya kemudian dipaparkan dalam pendekatan teoritis Johan Galtung mengenai transformasi konflik dalam rangka menyelesaikan konflik yang berbasis kekerasan. The paper discusses the possible applications of the concept of liminality in the realm of the classical Sanskrit literary production of South India, exemplified by the mahākāvya Pāṇḍyakulodaya (15 th-16 th centuries CE). Transcending from the ritual connotation ascribed to the anthropological category since van Gennep's theories, the modern application of liminality to broader historical and cultural changes will be taken into account. The close study of selected stanzas from this epic poem will show how the description of a military campaign seems to be permeated by liminal elements, which also appear in the portrayal of royal power. The new conceptualisation of kingship in the Pāṇḍyakulodaya, interpreted as the new institutional paradigm after the transitional period investing the Pāṇḍya dynasty and its weakened political influence, will be analysed in the frame of the general categorisation of cultural reaction.

This summer I worked at the Eastbourne Library researching every kind of information (names, news and images) on soldiers killed, wounded or missing in action during the First World War for the local study collection. In particular I worked on the archive of the Eastbourne Chronicle a local newspaper issued every Saturday, which is now known as the Eastbourne Herald. Through issue after issue I could follow all the activities of the war: from the recruiting and training of soldiers to the impact of the conflict on everyday life. At the beginning of the war the names of the dead soldiers were in the part of the newspaper generally dedicated to the births, marriages and deaths but with the passing of time they became so many that a special space was created for publishing the Roll of Honour about the East Sussex. Reading the Roll of Honour I could follow the traces of some soldiers mentioned as missing or wounded and find them two or three weeks later among the deaths or more rarely with the survivors. Sometimes a soldier's name can be featured in the news with subjects apparently not directly connected to the war. For this reason during my research I read different articles and one drew my attention; "An Eastbournian in Italy". It was about AJ Vinall, a private of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, who wrote his impressions about the life in the small village where he lived. Vinall didn't write where he stayed, probably in the North East were there was the front between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Between 1917 and 1918 most British troops were concentrated on the Eastern Alps and the Royal Warwickshire were here. The involvement of British troops in Italy has been largely overlooked in favour of the Western Front. The village of which Vinall spoke was most likely in this area but I can't say precisely where: the poor condition of the villagers he describes were unfortunately very common. Indeed Vinall didn't write on the war at the Italian front but on the hard life of this people: What the villagers live on passes my comprehension. There seems to be no sit-down meal, but bits eaten here and there, and while going about their work. The staple food seems to be polenta, made from maize flour, and it helps out sometimes when bread is short Vinall write about things which may be common for us today but not for him or the readers of the newspaper: I have not seen the country people drink anything but vino, made from grapes. It is given to the children as well as adults, and seems to be their only drink. I have never tried vino, as I have seen its effects too much, but must not write more about that. Upon reading these articles for the first time the main thing I liked was Vinall's concern for the poor condition of the villagers and his openness regarding them: Another item of interest is that some of the people sit in the sheds with the cows to keep warm and save firing. I tried one night, but my nostrils did not allow me to remain. Even children have gone back to the old ages, and we find them sleeping in the mangers. The fighting on the Italian Front during the First World War was marked by harsh weather conditions and terrain deeply unsuited for fighting. The article was of March 1918 and the Eastbourne Chronicle promised more news from him and I was very interested because I would like read others of his impressions on my country. Unfortunately AJ Vinall never wrote again and I didn't find other information about him in the Chronicle.

This study discusses extracurricular activities for history activists at SMA Negeri 11 Banjarmasin. The limited subject matter taught in schools about local history in history subject makes students less aware of and familiar with the history of their own area. This study aims to describe the extracurricular activities of history activists at SMA Negeri 11 Banjarmasin. In this study used qualitative methods, in obtaining informations begins with interviews, observations and documentation which are used as research sources. There are two sources of data used in this study, namely primary data sources for coaches, student members of history activists, and secondary sources in the form data of data from schools. History activists extracurricular activities were formed as a place to channel the tallents of history activitiests whi focus on the introduction and knowledge of the local history of the South Kalimantan region.
