Chi non conosce la formula abracadabra? Da secoli ha molto successo. Le si attribuiscono poteri magici, oggi quasi sempre scherzosamente, in passato più seriamente. Nel gergo tecnico della linguistica si può affermare che ha una grande efficacia fonosimbolica o ideofonica, perché è una delle parole ed espressioni che suggeriscono col suono stesso il senso, l’immagine, il fatto o la condizione che vogliono significare. Il suo utilizzo è forse in declino, tanto più in questa epoca di “secolarizzazione digitale”, in cui ci affidiamo agli incantesimi dell'intelligenza artificiale? Sbagliato. Perché è arduo cancellare dal nostro immaginario una parola radicatissima; è in circolazione nella penisola italiana da quasi duemila anni e si usa ancora – invariata – in quasi tutte le lingue europee e in parecchie in tutto il mondo: dall’italiano al tedesco, dal tamil all’yiddish, dall’inglese al mongolo e al giapponese (in Giappone si pronuncia "aburakadabura"). Nella lingua italiana quel termine è ancora così utilizzato che, facendo una ricerca online tra le notizie pubblicate da mass media professionali, si scopre nei contesti più diversi

In my 2021 work entitled Ambrosius Aurelianus and the Apocalypse of King Arthur,  I showed that Gildas embedded three sets of  forty-four words into sentences of DE:25-26 of De Excidio Britanniae (DEB, DE:) in relation to the time after the siege of Badon in which he was writing. At that time, due to the pressures of completing that work, a full analysis of DE:25-26 dealing with Ambrosius and Badon was not undertaken. This short paper presents the Christiological numbers (33, 333, 888) embedded in DE:25/26 that confirm beyond doubt that Gildas intended to embed the numbers.

In my 2021 work entitled Ambrosius Aurelianus and the Apocalypse of King Arthur,  I showed that Gildas embedded three sets of forty-four words into sentences of DE:25-26 of De Excidio Britanniae (DEB, DE:). At that time, due to the pressures of completing that work, a full analysis of DE:25-26 dealing with Ambrosius and Badon was not undertaken. In the intervening two years much has now been learnt via the release of subsequent papers. This short paper therefore presents the full numbers embedded in DE:25/26, proving once and for all that he meant the numbers and more than that proving that he did intend to embed three sets of 44 words. This work expands on the religious numbers embdedded that verify the counts, such as 33, 333 and 888.

Nos últimos anos intensificaram-se as pesquisas no campo da educação, em especial no que diz respeito a situação de fracasso escolar. Partindo deste cenário a pesquisa buscou compreender e estabelecer relações dentro da perspectiva do zelador, entre instituição escolar, a situação de fracasso, os micropoderes e a relação com o saber; procurando apontar quais ações do zelador podem contribuir para a formação da subjetividade. O estudo pautará as hipóteses em dois autores base: Michel Foucault (1999) e Bernard Charlot (2000). Os resultados apontam para a figura do zelador e para o fenômeno da normalização na constituição das subjetividades dos sujeitos que frequentam a escola, além de evidenciar também algumas práticas deste profissional que podem auxiliar na superação das situações de fracasso.

The Coptic book list P. Fay. Copt. 44 preserves two Greek loanwords, ⲥϯⲥⲓ (στίζειν) and ⲡⲉⲧⲁⲗⲟⲛ (πέταλον), whose exact meaning has been debated since the publication of the papyrus. The paper argues that the two terms may refer to the decoration of the bookbinding.

Nere schiere di formiche che si muovono frenetiche nel sonno agitato di un imperatore, inquietanti avvistamenti di lupi solitari tra le vie e le porte di Roma, stormi di gru all'orizzonte che guidano i marinai salvandoli dalle tempeste. Difficile pensare alle antiche culture greca e romana senza riferirsi a loro, agli animali. Erano presenze costanti, compagni di vita, aiutanti insostituibili, spesso ospiti indesiderati, talvolta protagonisti di sogni angoscianti, in qualche occasione persino creature divine, protette e tutelate dagli dèi. Di certi animali si diceva che avessero governato gli uomini prima delle divinità, di altri che fossero stati addirittura i progenitori delle forme iniziali di vita umana. Attraverso un'ampia scelta di testi greci e latini il volume offre un primo, inedito, viaggio nel mondo delle relazioni tra uomini e altri animali nell'Atene di Socrate e Platone e ai tempi di Roma antica.

This contribution is the response piece to a larger dialogue of three articles that form the second issue of JOLCEL. The other contributions are “From the Epistolae et Evangelia (c. 1540) to the Espejo divino (1607): Indian Latinists and Nahuatl religious literature at the College of Tlatelolco” by Andrew Laird (pp. 2-28), “Latinidad, tradición clásica y nova ratio en el Imperial Colegio de la Santa Cruz de Santiago Tlatelolco” by Heréndira Téllez Nieto (pp. 30-55) and “Nordic Gods in Classical Dress: De diis arctois by C. G. Brunius” by Arsenii Vetushko-Kalevich (pp. 57-71).

Beim folgenden Text handelt es sich um die schriftliche Fassung eines Vortrags, den der Autor beim Festakt zum 30-jährigen Jubiläum des Humanistischen Verbandes Deutschlands am 24. Juni 2023 in Neu- Isenburg hielt. In drei Panels stand die Frage nach Lebenssinn aus hu- manistischer Haltung zur Diskussion, wobei jeweils verschiedene Zeit- dimensionen den Ausgangspunkt bildeten: Vergangenheit, Zukunft und – im vorliegenden Beitrag – Gegenwart.

Poems 7 and 8 from Book II of Ovid’s Amores appear to form an inseparable whole and have so been taken by Ovidian scholarship. However, studies pertaining to the relations between both texts and to the internal structure of each one of them have in general been limited to thematic approaches. In this article, we intend to re-examine their structure and relationship by focussing on Ovid’s use of vocabulary to craft such a complex and harmonious composition. That Roman dance culture was rich and vibrant is made abundantly clear in this book, both in Karin Schlapbach’s excellent lengthy introduction, and in the fourteen chapters of this book. This is an extremely useful collection of papers. Its contents and the numerous references to relevant literature will help put Roman dancing on the map. Schlapbach’s modestly expressed hope that this volume “will serve as an invitation to further study” will undoubtedly be fulfilled.

The Roman Erotic Elegy is a topic that has been widely researched by scholars from areas related to Classical Studies. However, the researches usually concern on the poetic issue related to the elegiac genre, or they address to elegiac authors and their compositions. In this literary genre, especially when it comes to love poetry, the themes always relates to women, lovers and their moral behaviors and ideals, which arouses the curiosity of other women for this type of reading. What this love poetry can tell us about the education of women? In this sense, the objective of this study concerns to the erotic elegy and their possibility of contributing to the education of Roman women.

Lo studio della ricezione delle Bucoliche di Virgilio deve tenere conto di dinamiche complesse, determinate dall'eterogeneità che caratterizza il genere pastorale fin dalle sue origini. Questo intervento elabora una lettura della quarta ecloga di Calpurnio Siculo, proponendo di indagarne le linee di continuità, più che le deviazioni, rispetto al modello delle Bucoliche. Il misterioso silenzio di Coridone nell'incipit dell'ecloga (vv. 1-4), la dolcezza attribuita al suo canto (v. 9), l'elogio del patrono Melibeo (vv. 29-42), i temi della successione poetica (vv. 58-63) e del potere orfico del canto (vv. 64-69), il ricorso all'onomastica tradizionale dei pastori (con annessa allusione al "passato bucolico" dei personaggi) sono esaminati nella loro interazione con l'intertesto virgiliano. Lo scopo è di mettere in luce le strategie con cui Calpurnio Siculo fa uso degli strumenti espressivi e tematici messi a disposizione dal modello di Virgilio per sviluppare un discorso politico, senza rinnegare l'appartenenza della propria poesia al genere pastorale.

Reception studies on Virgil's Eclogues must take into account complex dynamics, determined by the heterogeneity that characterizes the pastoral genre from its origins. 
This paper offers a reading of Calpurnius Siculus’ 4th Eclogue, proposing an investigation of its lines of continuity, rather than deviations, from the model of Virgil’s Eclogues. The mysterious silence of Corydon in the Eclogue's incipit (vv. 1-4), the sweetness attributed to his song (v. 9), the praise of his patron Meliboeus (vv. 29-42), the themes of poetic succession (vv. 58-63) and of the Orphic power of song (vv. 64-69), the use of the shepherds’ traditional names (with an allusion to the characters’ ‘bucolic past’) are examined in their interaction with the Virgilian intertext. The aim of this analysis is to highlight Calpurnius Siculus’ ability in exploiting the expressive and thematic tools provided by Virgil's model to develop a political discourse, without denying that his own poetry belongs to the pastoral genre.

The life and work of Optatian are intricately interwoven: just as Optatian’s carmina rank among the most astonishing literary products of their times, his cursus honorum amounts to one of the most surprising senatorial careers in the age of Constantine. The sources are few and far between. But by reexamining the available materials, this chapter points to Optatian’s meteoric rise to political prominence: although the poet’s political career stagnated before his exile, Optatian rose to the highest strata of the senatorial elite immediately after his rehabilitation. The chapter begins by surveying the epigraphic and epistolary evidence for this astonishing career: while a close analysis of the prosopographical information contained in two inscriptions (one from Rome and one from Sparta) provides a basic framework for Optatian’s political biography, a close reading of the two surviving letters (for which a new chronology and context is suggested) yields crucial insights into the earliest phase of interaction between poet and emperor. Against this backdrop, the chapter revisits the manuscript tradition in order to propose a new model for the editing and publication of the purported insigne volumen dedicated to Constantine, and through which the poet secured his recall from exile. The sudden twists of fate in Optatian’s biography, the chapter argues, are closely linked to the poet’s special creations as a medium for interacting with the emperor – which again conveys precious information about the poetic conception of Optatian’s works.

This essay highlights the historical, political and intellectual significance of Cicero’s legacy in the colonial Americas in three distinct phases:
(i) Cicero’s importance for early missionaries and chroniclers in the 1500s, following the first European incursions and conquests.
(ii) The role of Cicero in colonial education and literary production, and some foundational rhetorical treatises produced in Mexico and Peru.
(iii) Cicero’s notion of patria, recalled in some vernacular works from the 1600s became increasingly prevalent in Latin writing over the eighteenth century, and anticipated connections between his oeuvre and expressions of nationalism which developed with the onset of independence in the 1800s.

Pasquali's "Arte allusiva" presupposes the contemporary philological debate, especially in Germany, about the originality of Latin poetry. The theoretical aspect of the question, i.e. that works admittedly modelled on other works may possess their own artistic quality, had been widely discussed by the Italian school of aesthetics. Pasquali's article combines these debates in an original approach. He grants to allusion the full dignity of an artistic process with its own specific prerogatives: allusion evokes a different, more ancient world in a modern text, and thus confronts tradition, recovering and reforming it for a contemporary setting. Allusion appears as peculiar to a production that confronts its own present with a past of artistic traditions possessing a marked significance for authors and public, typically the case for Hellenistic poetry and all Latin literature. Recent theories of intertextuality, and the intertextual analysis conducted today on ancient texts often make reference to Pasquali, reinterpreting the positions that he elaborated in different paths, which are here identified and briefly described.

El presente artículo propone arrojar luz sobre algunos intersticios poco iluminados de la poesía de José María Arguedas y su bilingüismo. El estudio indaga las razones de la elección del quechua como lengua privilegiada en la redacción de los poemas arguedianos y considera la cuestión de su traducción poética al castellano por parte del autor. El núcleo fundamental del análisis es la profundización del tejido semántico de dos
textos poéticos, “Imán Guayasamin” / “Qué Guayasamín” y “Gabicha”, a partir de la lectura de una de las canciones populares indígenas recogidas en Canto kechwa: “Yawarta muchuchin” / “¡Qué dolor soñará…!”.

Pliny stands at the intersection between epistolary (biographical) fiction and fact. He is routinely studied by two academic constituencies whose critical assumptions do not necessarily align: ancient historians and literary critics. Statements about biographical fiction in Pliny often proceed from unargued assumptions about 'how literature works'-assumptions generally derived from study of the Augustan poets. I argue that assumptions about autobiographical fiction in Ovid cannot simply be transferred to Pliny. We need to construct individual theories for individual authors, working from the text up to personalized theory, rather than from generalized theory down to text. The Augustan poetry book is central to the development of Latin letter collections (in sharp contrast to the lack of influence from poetry books on the Greek epistolographical tradition). But the poetics of the two Roman forms are fundamentally different. In Ovid's Amores, the signifier is centripetal and returns to reflect on its own programmatic status within a collection; but Pliny's letters are centrifugal and generally move outwards from internal signifier to external signified. Prospects for reading events in Pliny's life as primarily instantiations of a literary programme are diminished.

El presente trabajo revisa la representación de la muerte, tanto de los cuerpos exánimes como sus significaciones y relaciones, que se establecen con y a partir de los cadáveres, en tres relatos de ficción: las novelas La transmigración de los cuerpos de Yuri Herrera (Periférica, 2013) y Lobo de Bibiana Camacho (Almadía, 2017), así como el cuento "El dolor los vuelve ciegos" de Eduardo Ruiz Sosa (en Cuántos de los tuyos han muerto, Candaya, 2019). Para dicho análisis realizaré una lectura cercana de los textos y me apoyaré principalmente en diversas reflexiones bio/necro-políticas de corte tanto histórico-político-filosófico, como artístico.

Il libro raccoglie sedici lavori di Vincenzo Ortoleva pubblicati (o in corso di pubblicazione) tra il 2017 e il 2022, relativi a temi propri della filologia greca e latina, non esclusivamente ‘classica’, ma anche bizantina, mediolatina e umanistica. Sono inoltre trattati argomenti pertinenti alla storia degli studi e all’archeologia, e si rinvengono notazioni sulle continuazioni romanze di termini latini. Il volume fa seguito al precedente, che comprendeva gli scritti del periodo 2012-2016, e completa la riedizione della produzione del decennio.

En las bibliotecas españolas se conservan poco más de una docena de manuscritos de las "Metamorfosis" de Ovidio fechados entre los años finales del siglo XII y el siglo XIV. La mayoría de ellos transmiten extensas glosas en sus márgenes. El Grupo de Investigación Nicolaus Heinsius de la Universidad de Huelva ha elaborado el estudio sistemático y detallado del texto de Ovidio transmitido en los códices españoles. Este esfuerzo de catalogación y estudio permite situar la tradición conservada en España y quizá realizada en suelo hispano durante los siglos medievales dentro de la transmisión textual europea del texto ovidiano. Los resultados de los diferentes análisis han ubicado muchos de estos manuscritos en ramas antiguas del stemma codicum vinculadas con las tradiciones especialmente francesas e italianas. En el trabajo que presentamos nos gustaría centrarnos, apoyándonos en la investigación que nos precede, en los márgenes, en los comentarios completamente inéditos que transmiten algunos de estos manuscritos. Nuestro primer objetivo es situar las glosas latinas conservadas en España dentro de la tradición europea de comentario. En un segundo término, compararemos esta exégesis con las primeras traducciones romances de las "Metamorfosis" que se han conservado en España, concretamente con aquella en castellano incluida en la "General estoria" (ca. 1270) de Alfonso X. Trabajaremos en esta ocasión sobre el mito de Calisto (met. 2.401-531) cuya versión íntegra, acompañada de numerosas y complejas glosas, se inserta en la primera parte de la estoria universal alfonsí. Para ello nos serviremos de los manuscritos De, Es2, Es3, Mt, Mt3, Mt4, Mt5, Sa, So, To y To2 según la catalogación del Grupo Heinsius; son aquellos que consideramos más relevantes para el estudio según nuestro trabajo previo. Como base para el estudio de los comentarios partimos de la investigación fundamental de Coulson, Anderson y Levy (2022), y para la relación con el mito de Calisto en la "General Estoria", del artículo y la tesis doctoral de Salvo (2012). Dentro del trabajo presentaremos la transcripción parcial de las glosas que consideramos más relevantes y el análisis que permite establecer su relación con los comentarios más señalados de los siglos XII y XIII: las "Allegoriae" de Arnulfo de Orléans (Ghisalberti 1932), los "Integumenta" de Juan de Garlandia (Ghisalberti, 1933), el comentario Vulgata (Coulson y Martina 2021) y el del manuscrito Vaticanus latinus 1479 de la Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana (Ciccone y Possamaï 2020).

This chapter studies grafting in Pliny's Natural History. Noting grafting's metaphorical suitability to represent social relations, Manolaraki argues that Pliny's use of grafting can be seen as crafting a narrative of Vespasian and critica~ aspects ~f his reign. Contextualizing previous arboreal castings of imperial power, specifically as an apt metaphor for Julio-Claudian succession, Manolaraki discusses how Pliny's use of grafting suggests Vespasian as a 'splice' into that Julio-Claudian tree. This Vespasianic graft corresponds both to Vespasian's peripheral background and his innovations as emperor. As the progenitor of a new dynasty and one who projected Italic traditions at Rome, his reign finds a fiting expression in grafting. Pliny's use of grafting in the Natural History parallels Vespasian's assertion of his peripheral, marginal, characteristics into the center of Rome and Roman politics. • •

What was a medieval magic show like? Who were the performers? Who were the audience? What tricks and illusions did they perform? Where and how did this take place? When and where does our evidence come from? This paper will present an introduction to medieval sources for magic tricks and illusions from both ‘European’ and ‘Middle Eastern’ traditions, and it will attempt to offer answers to the above questions, while also considering questions of continuities over time and transmissions over regions.

Fulvio Nobiliore fu un personaggio di spicco nella politica romana all’indomani della seconda guerra punica. Del suo rapporto con Catone si hanno scarse notizie, sufficienti però a comprendere che le relazioni tra i due non furono mai troppo idilliache: i pochi frammenti nei quali Nobiliore compare in relazione a Catone 1 ricordano infatti soltanto attacchi indirizzati al conquistatore di Ambracia. Questi frammenti furono considerati come parte di un’unica orazione pronunciata, secondo P. Fraccaro, negli anni immediatamente successivi alla censura di M. Fulvio Nobiliore e di M. Emilio Lepido (179 a. C.). Tuttavia, alcuni elementi emersi durante una recente ricostruzione della carriera politica di Nobiliore sembrano consentire una differente ipotesi.

The doctrine of inspiration grounds Christian use and interpretation of Scripture, making this doctrine at once theoretical and practical. Many theoretical accounts, however, restrict the "inspired" status of biblical texts to a single text-form, which introduces problems for the practical use of Scripture in view of the texts' historical multiformity. This article argues that such restrictions of inspiration are theologically problematic and unnecessary. Contextualizing inspiration within the divine revelatory economy, this article argues that the Spirit's same goals and varied activities in the texts' composition obtain also in their preservation, so that we can consider multiple forms of a text to be inspired while acknowledging that not all forms are inspired to equal ends in the history and life of the church. The article concludes with hermeneutical reflections affirming that we, today, can read the "word of the Lord" while also affirming the place of textual criticism in theological interpretation.

Global production of highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) has continuously increased since the early 1990s, with substantial growth occurring after 2000. Benefiting from this growth is the organic blueberry (Vaccinium sp.) industry, which has been strengthened by increases in organic food sales and the price premiums received for organic products. Washington State is a national and global leader in organic blueberry production, with 47% of the national organic blueberry crop harvested in 2008. As this statewide industry continues to grow, it is important to recognize both the opportunities and challenges related to organic blueberry production and marketing. This paper addresses those issues and describes trends in organic highbush blueberry production using Washington State as a case study due to its scale and distinctive regional differences within the state in regard to climate, horticultural production, and market venues. The science blog “Übersetzungsgeschicht(n)” (“Translation (Hi)Stories”) is now online: we want to give our readers insights into early modern translation cultures and equally into the day-to-day research of historians of translation. The category artifacts uses objects as starting points for a short dive into translation processes; it shows the contingencies, rivalries, amusing incidents, and different translation choices. Anecdotes focus on methodological questions drawn and made tangible by employing a short example from the vast array of early modern translation processes. In our interviews, we want to make the researchers themselves visible, showing different career paths and positions, research decisions, and processes of academic collaboration.
