Introduzione Gli spettacolari e repellenti apparati scenici dell’ultimo canto dell’Inferno, la teologia e ideologia politica che si riflettono nelle pene orrende, hanno da sempre interessato i lettori di Dante. Questo canto non di rado ha suscitato indignazione nei commentatori; basti pensare, ad esempio, a T. S. Eliot, grande ammiratore della cultura classica, che giudicava inaccettabile la presenza di elementi così dissonanti nell’opera dantesca. Eliot riteneva che il canto XXXIV fosse “il più difficile a una prima lettura” e suggeriva al lettore repulso dalle descrizioni “di saltare l’ultimo canto e tornare all’inizio del canto terzo” o “di aspettare finché non abbia letto e convissuto per anni con l’ultimo canto del Paradiso”, in cui le imperfezioni del canto XXXIV vengono corretti”. 1

My paper focuses on the influence of an important descent-into-hell narratives of classical literature, the catabasis of Orpheus on Dante's journey through the other world. Dante, in his own confession, is familiar with the Ovidian myth of the Thracian poet, but he is undoubtedly influenced also by other elaborations and interpretations of the myth. One of the aims of this work is to present and explore these sources. The special feature of Orpheus is that he is both poet and traveller of the underworld, and in this quality he turns out an unique Greek-Roman mythological antecedent of Dante. The other purpose of my analysis is to examine Dante's attitude with the comparison of Dante's texts and their possible sources, while taking into consideration the 14th century commentaries to Dante which shed light to the intellectual horizon of the contemporary reader.

This contribution provides a concise update on the status questionis regarding the Questio de aqua et terra, and proposes a hypothesis about why Dante wrote it. The idiosyncrasies of the text, which have contributed to its ambiguous status within the canon of Dante's oeuvre, are understood to be the expression of Dante the exile's pressured situation during a period of transition between residences in Verona and Ravenna, while the Paradiso was still "in progress."

Piers Plowman's Decolonialism takes up the theme of Decolonialism, of Liberation Theology, of the Open Society,  the subject of the final chapter of a just-finished book on Dante, but now studied in Langland's Piers Plowman. Classics Hannah Sullivan T. S. Eliot made repeated, polemical, and idiosyncratic use of the word 'classic' and its cognates 'classical' and 'classicism' in his prose writings. In the earlier part of his career, he tended to use the term not to refer to writing in Latin and Greek (the Classics) or even to canonical texts in a wider range of languages, but as a call to arms. In his critical lexicon of the 1910s and 1920s, 'classicism' meant writing that was intelligently organised, mature, well proportioned and impersonal rather than gushingly emotional, personal or vague; and the opposite of 'classicism' was 'romanticism'. Both terms are to be understood primarily as formal and stylistic rather than temporal distinctions. Andrew Marvell is a 'classic in a sense which [Thomas] Gray and [William] Collins are not' because of his sense of argumentative and aesthetic 'equipoise, a balance and proportion of tones' (SE, 302). Charles Baudelaire's poetry may superficially appear classical, but a subtle 'inner disorder' means that it has 'the external but not the internal form of classic art' (SE, 423-4). In an essay on John Milton-the most classically educated and classicising of English poets-Eliot again withholds the label: his style is baroque, 'peculiar', and too divorced from common speech, 'it is a style of a language still in formation' (OPP, 58). The 1923 essay 'Ulysses, Order, and Myth' may ostensibly be about James Joyce's use of Homeric myth to structure the chaos of modern life, but it is also a personal intervention in literary politics: 'I think that Mr Aldington and I are more or less agreed as to what we want in principle, and agreed to call it classicism' (SP, 176). Eliot admits in this essay that the question of how to achieve or even define classicism is more complex. By 1928, however, he was using his own term as part of a much broader statement of faith and belief, as if its meaning were transparent and historically stable. He declared in the preface to For Lancelot Andrewes that he was 'classicist in literature, royalist in politics, and anglo-catholic in religion' (FLA, ix). But not everyone was convinced that Eliot had a right to appropriate the term.

Francesco D'Ovidio osserva che, nel dialetto fiorentino, l'articolo "il" si fuse con la consonante iniziale della parola che seguiva. D'Ovidio osserva: "Il popolino di Firenze, dove noi diciamo il pane, il vino, il capo, dice ippane, ivvino, iccapo. (Il Propugnatore,Gaetano Romagnoli editore, Bologna, 1872). La locuzione "il Dio" diede "Iddio", nel dialetto fiorentino. La parola Iddio divenne in seguito parola italiana letteraria. Troviamo la parola Iddio nel Decamerone del Boccaccio, nella sesta novella, dedicata a Guido Cavalcanti. Un gruppo di giovani fiorentini tenta di convincere Cavalcanti della esistenza di Dio, che Cavalcanti negava. "Guido, tu rifiuti d'esser di nostra brigata. Ma ecco, quando tu avrai trovato che Iddio non sia, che avrai fatto?". Possiamo forse dire che l'articolo "il", nel Duecento e nel Trecento, era usato in Toscana e in Italia settentrionale. In seguito, questo articolo si diffuse a Roma, al sud e nel centro-sud. Le regole che definiscono l'uso di "il" e "lo", nell'italiano standard, devono essere relativamente recenti.
