Reform of state administration during the reign of Augustus Roman law reflected in non-legal antic relics Abstract The period of the late republic and the early principate was a time of many political, social and legal changes in the history of the ancient Roman state. In a relatively short period of time, the old state institutes collapsed and were fundamentally reformed or replaced with new ones. This thesis mainly focuses on the issue of reforms in selected areas of public law, namely the areas of state administration, tax administration and financial administration. Archaeological and instrumental data indicate that the southern sector of the volcanic island of Lipari has been subsiding for the last 2100 years due to isostatic and tectonic factors, at variable rates of up to ~11 mm a−1. Based on this data, a detailed marine flooding scenario for 2100 AD is provided for the bay of Marina Lunga in the eastern part of the island from (1) an ultra‐high‐resolution Digital Terrain and Marine Model (DTMM) generated from multibeam bathymetry (MB) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), (2) the rate of land subsidence from Global Positioning System (GPS) data and (3) the regional sea‐level projections of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). When land subsidence is considered, the upper bound of sea‐level rise is estimated at 1.36 m and 1.60 m for RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 climate change scenarios, respectively. Photogrammetry has often been the most preferable method for the geometric documentation of monuments, especially in cases of highly complex objects, of high accuracy and quality requirements and, of course, budget, time or accessibility limitations. Such limitations, requirements and complexities are undoubtedly features of the highly challenging task of surveying an underwater archaeological site. This paper is focused on the case of a Hellenistic shipwreck found in Greece at the Southern Euboean gulf, 40-47 meters below the sea surface. Underwater photogrammetry was chosen as the ideal solution for the detailed and accurate mapping of a shipwreck located in an environment with limited accessibility. There are time limitations when diving at these depths so it is essential that the data collection time is kept as short as possible. In the wall paintings of the Roman period, architectural elements performed as a stonemason's work, stucco decoration, marbling or incrustation, as well as whole spatial-architectural entities were often imitated. This paper deals with architectural elements presented in the wall paintings of Sirmium, the centre of the Roman province of Pannonia, a colony and an imperial residence, whose remains are situated in the present-day Sremska Mitrovica in Serbia. It was founded in the second half of the 1st century BC and lasted until the Avarian attacks at the end of the 6th century AD.

The territory of Calvello is located in the heart of Lucanian Appenine mountain, in the northwestern part of Basilicata. The site of Calvello, about 40 km south from Potenza, is situated on a hill high 795 m a.s.l., over against the northern slope of Volturino Mount. On the slopes of the hill flows the estuary ‘La Terra’, a tributary of Camastra river, which divides the main site from Sant’Antuono hamlet, arose out of the walls in the Late Middle Ages. The entire territory is characterized by a rich cultural, archaeological and monumental landscape, mostly unknown, which requires a huge program of study, conservation and highlighting. L’établissement des “Cinquante Arpents” à Tremblay-en-France (Seine-Saint-Denis) est créé au tournant des IVe et IIIe s. av. n. è., à la limite nord-est de la cité des Parisii. Il offre une remarquable continuité d’occupation jusqu’à la fin du IIIe s. de n. è. puis une brève installation durant le dernier tiers du IVe s. Malgré son arasement prononcé, les nombreuses données mobilières et immobilières ont permis d’individualiser sept phases d’occupation bien caractérisées. Elles peuvent être rassemblées en quatre grandes étapes : La Tène moyenne/finale, le Haut-Empire, la deuxième moitié du IIIe s. et la fin du IVe s. Durant la majeure partie de sa longue histoire, le site est le siège d’une élite terrienne dont la prospérité repose sur l’échange de denrées agricoles via le contrôle des terres aux alentours. Sa position sociale comme la lisibilité des modèles interprétatifs en font un site de référence en Plaine de France.

Numerous mineralizations are located in the island of Thasos in the areas
of Limenas, Skala Rachoniou, Sotiros, Vatos, Kallirachi, Marlou, Kourlou,
Koumaria, Tzines, Mavrolakkas, Koinyra, Aghios Eleftherios, Skala Marion,
Vaftocheili, Vouves, Elia and Astris. Ancient mining activity is recorded in
most areas exploiting presumably gold, silver, lead, copper and iron. The present study focuses on the geological characteristics of these mineralizations and especially on their chemical and mineralogical characteristics. The results imply high silver concentrations and presence of gold in the area of Limenas. Copper, lead and zinc are also present in a number of mineralizations, while iron is abundant in most of these metallic occurrences

Thyateria antik kentinin mirasçısı olan Akhisar’da 1932 yılında inşa edilmiş olan ve bir kısmı öğretmen evi olarak kullanılan iki katlı bir binanın restore edilerek 2012 yılında müze olarak ziyarete açılmasıyla o güne değin Manisa Arkeoloji Müzesi’nde korunan bir grup eser Akhisar Arkeoloji Müzesi’nde sergilenmeye başlamıştır. Bu eserler içerisinde Hellenistik Dönem’e ait bir grup seramik de yer almaktadır. Bu çalışma kapsamında Akhisar Arkeoloji Müzesi’nde sergilenmekte olan bu seramikler formlarına ve gruplarına göre incelenmiş, her ne kadar buluntu yerleri ile ilgili detaylı bilgi olmasa da bazılarının üretim merkezleriyle ilgili öneriler getirilmeye çalışılmıştır. Müzedeki çalışmalarımız sonucunda saptanan Hellenistik Seramik grupları arasında siyah firnisli seramik, batı yamacı, kalıp yapımı kaseler ve lagynoslar yer almaktadır.

U radu se ukratko navode rezultati terenskoga rada na Palagruži tijekom rujna 2003. koji je nastavak radova obavljenih 1996. i 2002. Opisuje se nalaz ulomaka keramičkoga cjedila iz ranoga neolitičkog razdoblja na položaju Jonkova njiva, nalazi kasnoantičke arhitekture («utvrde») otkriveni ispred crkve sv. Mihovila te brojni nalazi, osobito grčke i helenističke keramike, na južnoj padini koji također potvrđuju postojanje Diomedova svetišta na Palagruži. Georadarska prospekcija pokazala je da ispod kamenog pločnika za sakupljanje kišnice postoje stariji arhitektonski ostaci. Na Palagruži se postavljaju trojezične ploče koje upozoravaju posjetioce na važnost njezina očuvanja. The complexity in the styles of 1200 Byzantine icons painted between 13th and 16th from Greece, Russia and Romania was investigated through the Kolmogorov algorithmic information theory. The aim was to identify specific quantitative patterns which define the key characteristics of the three different painting schools. Our novel approach using the artificial surface images generated with Inverse FFT and the Midpoint Displacement (MD) algorithms, was validated by comparison of results with eight fractal and non-fractal indices. From the analyzes performed, normalized Kolmogorov compression complexity (KC) proved to be the best solution because it had the best complexity pattern differentiations, is not sensitive to the image size and the least affected by noise. We conclude that normalized KC methodology does offer capability to differentiate the icons within a School and amongst the three Schools.

In this article, the authors attempt to illustrate how two Aboriginal community-based projects were conceptualized and developed through the collaborative efforts of four individuals who believed in the merits of a project aimed at survivors and intergenerational survivors of the residential school system as well as Aboriginal people in trouble with the law. Drawing upon a small body of literature on university/community collaboration, the authors illustrate the importance of meaningful collaboration between universities and communities in order to enhance a mutually beneficial relationship conducive to community-engaged scholarship. Through an examination of the case study of the Healing of The Seven Generations Project and the Four Directions Aboriginal Restorative Justice Project, the authors hope to illustrate to fellow Aboriginal colleagues in Canada the merits, strengths and challenges of university/ community collaboration. This thesis analyses the nature of Histria in Late Antiquity between the 3rd and the 7th century AD. Histria is chosen as a case study as it is the most comprehensively studied city in Scythia Minor for the period. The thesis has two focal points. Firstly, it investigates the evolution of the site in Late Antiquity. Secondly, it re-assesses the nature of Histria in terms of the divergent claims as proposed by Constantin Scorpan in 1980 and by Andrew Poulter in 1992 regarding the nature of the place and other cities in the region in Late Antiquity.

To achieve both aims, the thesis examines Histria in terms of its urban change and the transformation of both ecclesiastical and civic buildings and street networks in Late Antiquity. This is done within a chronological framework to assess the possible reasons for such change, such as Christianity, invasion, and urban reconstruction. In particular, the thesis concentrates on the Christianization of urban topography, and the inter-relationship between the extra- and intra-mural basilica churches there and Histria’s residential areas, in the context of the rise of Christianity in the Roman Empire during Late Antiquity. By examining the effect of Christianity on the development of urbanism in the region, the thesis will favour the idea that the classical urban amenities lost their function of earlier periods as Christianity transformed the urban areas with significant landmarks, most especially the basilicas.

Investigation of cropmarks known from aerial photographs revealed a rectangular complex of smaller enclosures, pits and other features, dating from the 1st-4th centuries AD.� This report gives an integrated account of the archaeological work carried out during groundworks for the construction of a wind farm on land in Burton Wold Farm in the eastern part of Burton Latimer parish.� It combines evidence from desktop assessment, geophysical survey, trial trench evaluation, watching brief and full excavation - focusing in particular upon the cropmark complex in the northern part of the Development Area, where Turbine 7 was to be located.� Here geophysical survey gave an overall view of the form of the complex as a whole, while excavation allowed a small area within the larger complex to be examined in detail.� Sections were excavated through enclosure ditches, gullies and a large pit.� The enclosures are thought to have functioned as pens for livestock.� Although no evidence of houses o...

A Tarraco (odierna Tarragona) c’erano diversi bagni pubblichi, tra i quali spicca un edificio termale presso il porto. Questo edificio fu costruito alla fine del II secolo d.C. o più probabilmente al III secolo d.C. 
I resti architettonici di questo edificio sono stati scoperti nel 1976. In quell’anno furono ritrovati diversi frammenti, pertinenti a una stessa statua di Apollo di dimensioni maggiori del vero . La scultura è datata all’inizio del II secolo d.C., il che ha fatto pensare che fu spostata da un edificio più antico per essere riutilizzata nelle terme.
Durante lo scavo posteriore di questa area, nel 1998, sono stati rinvenuti più statue e frammenti. Molti di essi rimangono inediti, mentre alcuni sono stati pubblicati superficialmente .
Lo scopo di questo lavoro è quello di far conoscere e studiare in dettaglio la totalità delle sculture ritrovate nell’area dell’edificio termale. In questo modo si intende completare gli studi su questi bagni, in particolare per quanto riguarda la loro decorazione e le motivazioni specifiche dell’erezione di sculture.

Digital images are all around and their number increases every day. However, this growing volume contrasts with a poor description in the vast majority of cases. The value of a picture to illustrate the original event, or to be used in other contexts or situations, is based on an appropriate description. The purpose of this paper is to reduce the difficulties encountered in describing images by categorizing them and the agencies, specifying uses, and exemplifying descriptive differences. The implementation of these recommendations improves the quality of records, helps in successful retrieval, and increases positive evaluations of web sites by clients and users
