(Abstract only – full text under copyright): This chapter analyzes Afrodiasporic myth, spirituality, and the environment in independent comics from Brazil and the Caribbean diaspora. Framed by the notion of the Atlantic and the Caribbean Sea as an "oceanic archive" (DeLoughrey 2017), it explores how Hugo Canuto's Contos dos Orixás (Tales of the Orixás), Greg Anderson-Elysée's Marassa and Is'nana the Were-Spider, and Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez's La Borinqueña reject the colonial designation of the sea as aqua nullius and weave many histories, stories, and mythologies into the fabric of the transatlantic space in which these word-drawn narratives are situated. The comics challenge the extractivism and exploitation of coloniality to foreground reciprocal relationships between the human, nonhuman, and more-than-human. Drawing on ancestral and ritual knowledge and the many "sea ontologies" of the waters (DeLoughrey 2017), the chapter places these 21 stcentury narratives into conversation with the work of M. Jacqui Alexander, Christina Sharpe, and Omise'eke Natasha Tinsley, among others, to discern the ways that Candomblé, Vodou, Santería, and Taíno spiritualities present a decolonial framework for sustainable relationships with the environment across the region.

This thesis examines a little-studied moment in Oklahoma’s environmental and Indigenous history: the era of the New Deal, Second World War, and early days of the Cold War. From the 1930s to the late 1940s, as Oklahoma reeled from twin economic and environmental catastrophes, local people, Native and non-Native, attempted to harness the revolutionary possibilities of the New Deal to improve their economic and ecological condition. Rising from the study of one specific area, the Cookson Hills in eastern Muskogee and western Cherokee County, this thesis examines how everyone in Oklahoma tied their future to the transformation of the land. Tying these developments to broader national trends during the New Deal, including rural land use adjustment and increasing urban federal investment, as well as the rise of an incipient national security state, this thesis argues principally for the continuity of two key themes in Oklahoma’s Native American history. What is the future of Filipino in Filipino American? What counts as Filipino in Filipino American? Who counts as Filipino in Filipino American? These are the questions I pose in light of demographic shifts over time and the advent of science and technology, including genetic testing. I launch my inquiry by first exploring indigenous perspectives and methods concerning Filipino identities. Secondly, I engage in storytelling methods that help illustrate the main themes that emerged from this inquiry. Thirdly, I explore some of the implications for self-understanding implied by recent developments in DNA testing. And finally, I focus my analysis on the future utility and continued relevance of what it means to be Filipino and Filipino American.

Scholars of German-Jewish history have long thought of anti-Jewish pogroms as being characteristic of, and mostly confined to, medieval Germany or Imperial Russia. Yet, this view marginalizes the significance of anti-Jewish violence in Germany in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which occurred with surprising regularity and involved different degrees of violence. Historians, who have so far mainly focused on the development of antisemitic theories and politics, have neglected to analyze how antisemitic ideas and violence against Jews were connected during the formative years of modern antisemitism in Germany. The COVID-19 pandemic spurred some regulators in the USA to require occupational health and safety programs to prevent COVID-19 transmission in workplaces. The objective of this study was to describe such state and federal regulations enacted between January 2020 and January 2022. Regulations, including emergency temporary standards (ETS) and permanent standards, were identified through a search of Nexis Uni and Bloomberg Law and review of US OSHA websites and the Federal Register. Full texts were reviewed for regulatory scope, hazard and exposure definitions, determination of exposure or risk levels, and control strategies. Four state (California, Michigan, Virginia, and Oregon) and two federal regulations were identified. All regulations described respiratory aerosols as the primary source of SARS-CoV-2 and recognized person-to-person transmission by droplet, airborne, and contact routes. The suffrage and birth control movements are often treated separately in historical scholarship. This essay brings together new research to demonstrate their close connections. Many suffragists became active in the birth control movement just before and after the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. The roots of suffrage arguments were deeply embedded in the same ideas that were foundational to the birth control movement: bodily freedom and notions of what constituted full and participatory citizenship. Beginning in the 1840s, women's rights reformers directly connected the vote to a broad range of economic and political issues, including the concept of self-ownership. Wide-ranging debates about individual autonomy remained present in women's rights rhetoric and were then repeated in the earliest arguments for legalizing birth control. The purpose of this research paper is to provide a better understanding of the challenges that a modern state faces in the current security environment. Given the emerging threat environment with innovative state and non-state actors willing to confront a modern state across a spectrum of activities, it is of vital importance to provide a clear picture for civil servants/employees of the state to best use the tools of good governance. Without a more robust employment of the whole-of-government resources and a holistic approach of the national security the modern state will not be able to counter such threats and seize, retain or exploit the strategic initiative.

Great Britain subjugated colonists using various power strategies, including dehumanization, misinformation, fear, and other divisive strategies. The Founders described these oppressive strategies as “a long train of abuses and usurpations.” Throughout the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, the Founding Fathers imbued the people with hope in a government for the people: one unlike that of the monarchy, which sought to protect itself at the expense of colonists. As a result, the Founders created a government more likely to lead with fairness, demonstrate respect for human dignity, unite Americans as one people, empower citizens through hope, and lead the nation toward security. En este artículo nos centraremos en la figura de los intérpretes hispanocriollos que acudieron a las expediciones a Salinas Grandes a partir de 1786. Con frecuencia estas figuras fueron desplazadas a un segundo plano en la documentación oficial en la que se ignoró la relevancia de sus roles. Para conocer sus trayectorias personales como asimismo las actividades que llevaron adelante en el marco de las travesías destinadas al mencionado paraje, trabajamos con manuscritos procedentes de diferentes fondos documentales, tales como diarios de viajes, oficios y sus correspondientes relaciones de novedades.

El objeto de este artículo es el proceso de reconocimiento de hijos en Cuenca, durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Este reconocimiento supone un acto de doble vía en el que se involucran los reconocedores (padres) y los reconocidos (hijas e hijos), en dos espacios claramente diferenciados: el familiar y el social, con implicaciones morales y económicas específicas. El trabajo se ocupa de analizar cartas de reconocimiento y testamentos celebrados en la ciudad, fuentes primarias mediante las cuales obtiene sus conclusiones.

This Dissertation seeks to examine the extent, nature, and application of Presidential Power of Pardon in Sierra Leone. To prepare the ground for takeoff, this Researcher will be diving into the historical and philosophical waters of Presidential Pardon.
Apparently, the work will also be spiced up by summarily examining what obtains in some other jurisdictions. This academic sojourn will be done by looking at well researched newspaper articles, dissertations, text books, and online publications.
So much will be brought to light, especially issues that surround the laws that guide the practice. There have been times when the public has asked whether it is right to pardon offenders who were convicted by the court of having committed felonious offences, especially murder. Sometimes, it is not so much about what ‘ought to be’, but it is about ‘what is’ provided by law. By pardoning offenders, Judges’ power is also in a way checked and proves that the extent of their power is limited. Their sentencing orders are not fait accompli.
The focus of this piece of work is the legal framework that has made it possible for current Presidents to abuse the Pardon Power. In a few landmark cases, the courts have defined key characteristics of Presidential Pardons and have more or less protected the Presidents from Parliamentary interference. Consequently sheltered, Presidents have worried little about legal consequences for their Pardon grants.
As will be discovered in this Research, the Power of Pardon in Sierra Leone is devoid of the principles of checks and balances. It is strictly a discretional power enjoyed solely by the President. However, in some jurisdictions, there are conventionally specified criteria which guide the grant of Pardon.
Moreover, this Research will journey into the Sierra Leone Correctional Service (SLCS) - examining what role it plays in the entire Presidential Pardon process and how it can contribute to bettering the process. The controversial Pardon of Mbaimba Moiforay (LAC), who was on death row, will also be looked at. His case may serve a useful example of some of the attendant irregularities and omission by highly placed authorities in the Presidential Pardon process. 
This research seeks to serve as a springboard for future research on this topic, thereby contributing meaningfully to the academic bank. This is particularly so, giving the fact that lawyers and political scientists alike have not spilled much ink exploring Presidential attitudes toward pardoning.
