18th Century Art

In 2019 Girodet’s lost entry for the 1786 Grand prix de peinture came to light and was acquired by the National Gallery of Art, Washington. The painting, which depicts a rarely represented incident from the story of Coriolanus – a subject that may have had contemporary political relevance –
was not awarded the prize, probably because Girodet was regarded as being too close to Jacques- Louis David, a relationship to which the work may allude.

La Fondazione Marignoli di Montecorona, dopo il successo delle due giornate di studio tenutesi nell’ottobre 2022, pensate come un momento di bilancio critico di tre importanti mostre dedicate in gran parte al Settecento romano, propone, insieme alla Fondazione Federico Zeri di Bologna, una nuova iniziativa, un convegno che si terrà nella Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Palazzo Collicola, a Spoleto il 7 e l’8 ottobre 2023. “Artisti che non si direbbon di primo seggio”. Comprimari (o protagonisti?) della scultura barocca tra Firenze e Roma.

Se ormai non si contano i convegni e le iniziative espositive dedicate a personalità come Bernini o Algardi, l’idea in questo caso è quella di affrontare lo studio della scultura barocca a Roma e a Firenze gettando luce su quelli che Luigi Lanzi avrebbe chiamato appunto ‘artisti che non si direbbon di primo seggio’, personalità tuttavia in grado di realizzare opere assolutamente notevoli e che si rivelano comunque fondamentali per mettere a fuoco nel modo migliore la straordinaria ricchezza e complessità del panorama della scultura di età barocca nell’Italia centrale. I curatori scientifici di queste giornate di studio, Andrea Bacchi, Duccio K. Marignoli e Simonetta Prosperi Valenti Rodinò hanno pensato in questo caso di dare la parola a studiose e studiosi giovani, in alcuni casi ancora in formazione, ma che hanno però già al loro attivo indagini originali e brillanti.

Emergerà così una volta di più come la scultura barocca sia stata a lungo un argomento di studio negletto, rendendo oggi possibili scoperte importanti tanto in luoghi periferici quanto in alcuni degli edifici più illustri della stessa Roma.

Pflugdarstellung aus dem 15. Jahrhundert in gotischen Sanktuarium der Pfarrkirche zu Sárospatak.
Auf den Maurresten des Chors, das 1530 oder später abgerissen und aufgefüllt wurde, ist eine primitive Darstellung eines Pflügevorganges zu sehen. Die Ritzarbeit stammt wahrscheinlich von Kinderhand. Der Verfasser versucht mit Hilfe von Kinderzeichnungen aus den umliegenden Dörfern, anderen zeitgenössischen Pflugdarstellungen und etnografischen Analogien den Typ des Pfluges festzustellen.
Der Verfasser nimmt an, dass es sich um einen Pflug mit asymmetrischer Pflugkarre handelt. Die Zeichnung kann in die Zeit zwischen 1480— 1490 datiert werden. Die Mitteilung wird durch die verhältnismässig wenigen Darstellungen in der ungarischen Pflugliteratur begründet. Die genannte Darstellung ist ungefähr gleichaltrig mit den zwei ältesten Pflugdarstellungen, die in Wappen vorkommen. Die Karre ist das früheste Denkmal dieser Art, das wir kennen, obwohl Pflugkarren in Ungarn schon viel früher benutzt wurden, wie den historischen Quellen über die Pflüge im 14. Jahrhundert zu entnehmen ist.

Il complesso di San Filippo Neri a Lodi fu costruito a partire dal 1740 su progetto di Giovanni Antonio Veneroni per volontà della locale congregazione dell'Oratorio. L'edifìcio comprendeva un tempo in un organismo unitario la chiesa, l'oratorio e la casa della Congregazione, ma in seguito alla soppressione degli oratoriani sotto il dominio napoleonico la fabbrica venne smembrata tra la chiesa, passata come sussidiaria alla cattedrale, e la parte conventuale, divenuta proprietà statale prima e comunale poi e da tempo sede della Biblioteca Laúdense e del Museo Civico di Lodi.

Autêntico Palácio do Saber, o seu aparatoso cenário traduz uma autêntica cosmovisão do Homem e da Cultura Barroca do séc. XVIII.

Réalisé pour la première exposition du galeriste Nicholas H. J. Hall à la TEFAF de Maastricht, ce livre se compose d’un avant-propos rédigé par Nicholas H. J. Hall et d’un essai d’Arthur K. Wheelock Jr. L’essentiel de la publication revient ainsi au conservateur américain plus qu’à son auteur. L’avant-propos pose le contexte particulier des tronies et leur étude. La définition donnée des tronies reste générale, classée comme des études de personnages. Hall insiste cependant sur la naissance du genre à Leyde et relève les paradoxes qui gravitent autour. En rappelant l’exposition de l’artiste Marlene Dumas en 20101, il assoie la difficulté principale rencontrée de nos jours dans la fortune critique des tronies. Artykuł poświęcony jest analizie aktywności Tomasza Mogilnickiego, człowieka zaufanego, przez lata zatrudnionego na usługach dworu Radziwiłłów. Mogilnicki był jednym z najbardziej zaufanych ludzi kanclerzyny wielkiej litewskiej Anny Katarzyny z Sanguszków Radziwiłłowej i jej głównym reprezentantem do prowadzenia interesów zagranicznych. W analizowanym okresie spraw newralgicznych, w które zaangażowany został Mogilnicki było przynajmniej kilka – począwszy działania w interesie spornych spraw majątkowych – fundamentalnych dla Anny Katarzyny z Sanguszków Radziwiłłowej –– poprzez trudny pod względem politycznym i dyplomatycznym okres wolnej elekcji po śmierci Augusta II, aż po agitowanie w kręgu dworskim na rzecz synów kanclerzyny, podobnie jak poszukiwanie dróg do uzyskania królewskiej łaski względem dystrybucji królewszczyzn i starostw na rzecz krewnych i koligatów Radziwiłłowej. The Church of St Stanislaus the Bishop and Martyr in Rome is the national church of Poland, where the funeral ceremonies of Polish rulers were celebrated. After the death of King John III Sobieski, ceremonial symbolic obsequies were held. Carlo Barberini, as cardinal protector of Poland, organized public and expensive ceremonies to properly honour the king’s death. The course of the funeral service and the funeral decoration are known in detail through three contemporary printed reports and an engraving describing every aspect of the ceremony and the decoration of the church in honour of the Polish king. The church was decorated with six painted medallions celebrating important events in the life of King John III Sobieski. The surviving four of the six medallions are now kept at the Galleria Nazionale di Arte Antica in the Palazzo Barberini in Rome. W zbiorach Muzeum Diecezjalnego w Toruniu (MDT) znajduje się rzadki parament z XVII wieku – dwustronnie malowana (olej na płótnie) i na awersie haftowana (nici jedwabne i złote na kanwie płóciennej) chorągiew procesyjna, ukazująca świętą z zakonu benedyktynek (św. Gertrudę lub Scholastykę) i św. Biskupa (Wojciecha?). Obiekt zachował się w stanie destruktu, a jego dokładna proweniencja ani dzieje nie są znane. Na podstawie ikonografii oraz cech rękodzieła, mających analogie w innych nowożytnych haftowanych tekstyliach z regionu,  można z dużym prawdopodobieństwem zakładać, że jest to element spuścizny po benedyktynkach kongregacji chełmińskiej, prawdopodobnie z Torunia. Komponowana szata roślinna jest nieodłącznym wątkiem wielowiekowej historii artystycznego ujarzmiania przypałacowego stoku Skarpy Warszawskiej, ale nie tylko. W ciągu ponad stu ostatnich lat była ona także integralnym elementem aranżacji wnętrza przeddziedzińca i  dziedzińca honorowego dzisiejszej siedziby Prezydenta RP. W szczytowym okresie swojego stylowego rozwoju, przypadającego na lata 1923-1943, aranżacja
ogrodowa stanowiła blisko 50% łącznej powierzchni obydwu dziedzińców. Zapoczątkowany w  latach pięćdziesiątych ubiegłego wieku regres kompozycyjny doprowadził do radykalnej redukcji udziału szaty roślinnej
obydwu pałacowych dziedzińców, oscylującego obecnie w granicach zaledwie 8%. Wraz z  redukcją rozległości powierzchni biologicznie czynnej pałacowych dziedzińców sukcesywnej dekonstrukcji i zatarciu ulegała
także forma struktur roślinnych, ewoluująca dynamicznie w tym miejscu od około 1880 r. aż do wybuchu powstania warszawskiego. Wydawać by się mogło, że komponowana zieleń towarzysząca była także elementem
dopełniającym formę pomnika konnego księcia Józefa Poniatowskiego. Paradoksalnie jednak pomnik w całej historii trwającej prawie 150 lat wędrówki przez Warszawę, w  lokalizacjach zarówno tych ziszczonych,
jak i  pozostających w  sferze koncepcyjnego zamysłu, rozmyślnie zaprojektowaną oprawę roślinną zyskał dopiero w 1922 r. Przewrotność dziejów sprawiła, iż zyskał swoją oprawę roślinną w miejscu, do którego dotarł ponad 40 lat od momentu jej ukształtowania. Zanim to jednak nastąpiło, monument wzbudzał określone wrażenia estetyczne dzięki
zapożyczonej, najczęściej wyłącznie architektonicznej scenerii miejsc swojego projektowanego i zrealizowanego posadowienia.

L'idée que le livre soigne est aujourd'hui très populaire en Occident, où se multiplient les ateliers de « bibliothérapie » et les ouvrages promettant une amélioration de la santé psychologique ou physiologique via la lecture. Conférant à la littérature une dimension existentielle, ces nouvelles pratiques puisent en réalité dans un imaginaire des pouvoirs de la fiction qui s'est déployé en Europe et ailleurs, d'hier à nos jours, et dont cet ouvrage propose la première étude générale. Les représentations littéraires du soin et de la guérison permettent en effet de mieux comprendre ce qui fonde l'espérance bibliothérapeutique contemporaine, en montrant sur quelles bases le livre peut revendiquer une action sur le corps et l'esprit et se faire, à terme, guide pour l'existence. Filozof zmieniony (A Philosopher Transformed) is a comic opera with educational elements, one of the first Polish-language works in this genre, staged in the carnival of 1771 in Słonim (now Slonim, Belarus) at the court theatre of Michał Kazimierz Ogiński. At present we only have its libretto, anonymously published in Vilnius in 1771 and again in 1779. All the twelve individual parts are sung. The libretto is preceded by a didactic preface and features two themes: a lyrical (amorous) and a satirical (humorous) one. The latter is reflected in character presentation, enhanced by the fact that most of them have telling surnames. Possibly inspired by Molière’s comedies, Ogiński also introduced realistic and satirical elements into the text. The opera comprises a total of sixteen sung numbers (nine in Act I, seven in Act II), including ten arias (one preceded by a recitativo), three duets, a trio, a sextet, and the final chorus. The opera contains two songs not previously identified by musicologists, which come from Ogiński’s 1770 collection of songs. These two, ‘Anetka’ (‘Anette’) and ‘O Filozofii’ (‘On Philosophy’) are used respectively in Scenes I and VI of Act II. The melody of the former song was also printed as an ‘Aria’ in an 1806 violin handbook, which shows that Ogiński’s opera enjoyed some popularity. The handbook quotes (mostly without giving the names of composers) melodies belonging to the late eighteenth-century repertoire. These include pieces by Ignaz Pleyel and excerpts from operas staged in Warsaw, such as Jan Stefani’s Cud mniemany, czyli Krakowiacy i Górale (The Supposed Miracle or Cracovians and Highlanders) and the extremely popular Zośka, czyli Wiejskie zaloty (Zoska, or the Village Amours) by
Maciej Kamieński.

This article details the presence and productivity of women artists at the Uffizi in Florence in the 18th and 19th centuries. A QR code on the second page takes the reader to an online repertory of supporting materials including my complete database of records of more than a thousand artworks executed by nearly 400 women artists visiting the Uffizi Gallery in this period. The shift in the numbers, national origins, and professional motivations of these women artists during this time is documented and explained.

En dépit de certaines idées reçues qui ont poussé longtemps la critique à étiqueter les Goncourt non seulement comme des représentants mineurs du réalisme et du naturalisme, mais aussi comme des écrivains renfermés trop dans leurs tics, ce travail propose de considérer à nouveaux frais l’œuvre des deux frères, à partir d’une interaction narrateur-lecteur et en se concentrant surtout sur ces deux figures de la communication littéraire. The publication is devoted to the biography of one of the most prominent female members of the Bar Confederation, Teofila Sapieżyna, née Jabłonowska, the wife of the grand krajczy of Lithuania, whose activity has not been the subject of an indepth analysis by historians. The monograph is structured thematically and chronologically, and consists of seven chapters. Chapter One focuses on Teofila Sapieżyna’s life before the establishment of the Bar Confederation in 1768 – her ancestry, family ties, education and the early years of her marriage to Józef Sapieha. The next part of the publication presents the activity of the duchess in the Bar Confederation. In addition to listing her activities, the chapter presents her motivation, the people with whom she was in the closest contact at that time and the way in which she built her position among confederates. This essay deals with a littl know portrait of the third Earl of Burlington in his Chiswick garden, accompanied by a servant carrying a potted pineapple plant. Thw painting, here attributed to William Aikman, is related to one formerly in the Ionides Collection and currently in the
Richmond upon Thames Borough Art Collection, which can also be attributed to William Aikman. The two portraits highlight the fashion for growing pineapples and Burlington's own role in the appreciation of this plant.

Die Entwicklung der neuzeitlichen Karikatur von einem künstlerischen Rand- zu einem druckgrafischen Massenphänomen ist aufs engste mit der europäischen Aufklärung verbunden. Ähnlich der etwas verklärenden Trennung zwischen geordnetem Disput und unstatthafter Schmähung wurde auch im Hinblick auf die neue Bildgattung unterschieden: „Moralische Gemälde“ stehen „Libellen“, Skandalbildern und Scherzblättern gegenüber.
Dabei bewegte sich die Karikatur des 18. Jahrhunderts in einem breiten, sehr kontrovers diskutierten Spektrum. Anhand ausgewählter Beispiele soll ein Einblick in die verschiedenen Funktionskontexte dieser „sozialen Bildgattung“ und ihrer historischen Reflexionen gegeben werden

U tekstu se donosi niz novih spoznaja o povijesti izgradnje i uređenja župne crkve sv. Vida u Brdovcu, koje su rezultat usporednog iščitavanja arhivskih izvora, ponajprije izvještaja kanonskih vizitacija, i nalaza konzervatorsko-restauratorskih istraživanja, a koje bitno mijenjaju prije objavljene teze. Iscrpno su sagledane sve povijesne faze s opisom građevnih transformacija i razvoja crkve, iz čega proizlazi zaključak da su se ključne intervencije dogodile tijekom 17. i 19. stoljeća, kad crkva dobiva današnji izgled. Razjašnjena je i građevna geneza kapele sv. Barbare, jedine bočne kapele kružnog tlocrta iz 17. stoljeća na području kontinentalne Hrvatske, a štukatura u njezinu interijeru, ovdje se po prvi put analizira i valorizira u kontekstu štukatura sjeverozapadne Hrvatske i susjednih regija. Prvi put se objavljuje i podatak o naručiteljici kapele i oltara sv. Barbare koju vizitatori izrijekom navode, a riječ je o Heleni pl. Patačić.

Целью статьи является рассмотрение женских портретов французской художницы М.-Э. Виже-Лебрен, созданных в России (1795-1801) и представляющих модель в поколенном срезе в интерьере, для понимания особенностей пространственного решения и его влияния на портретную характеристику. Исследование произведений позволяет не только выявить общие принципы организации портрета в творчестве мастера, но и сделать вывод о ее определяющем внимании к трактовке интерьера, который во многом определяет эффектную репрезентацию модели с оттенком небрежной естественности.

The object of the article is the consideration of female knee length portraits created by E. Vigée Le Brun in Russia (1795-1801) and representing model in interior to understand the features of the spatial solution and its influence on the portrait characteristic. The study of works gives a possibility not only to reveal the general principles of the portrait’s organization in the art of the master, but also to draw a conclusion about her decisive attention to the interpretation of the interior which largely determines the spectacular representation of the model with a touch of casual naturalness.

The article is devoted to the historiography of sentimentalism in the Russian scientific tradition. The purpose of the research is to compare the methods used in literary and art studies to overview this phenomenon. The uncertainty of ideas about sentimentalism in the visual arts requires an appeal to literary studies. A careful analysis of works on sentimentalism in this field revealed the special role of the works of M. M. Bakhtin and G. N. Pospelov, who created original concepts of this phenomenon, and has made it possible to state a wide range of methods. Consideration of the sentimentalism problem in the history of art has demonstrated not only the generality of ideas and a small number of methods in comparison with literary criticism, but also the main principles inherent in the scientific tradition. Firstly, the idea of sentimentalism is based on abstract theses. Secondly, the main approach is to compare sentimentalism with classicism and Romanticism, which prevents determining its place in the art of the 1790s. Thirdly, the pictorial system of sentimentalism is considered in the most general form and turns out to be devoid of a thorough art historical description. A critical analysis of historiography allowed to identify promising areas of modern research of sentimentalism in art criticism: a careful analysis of the artistic features of works, the study of the metamorphoses of the portrait genre as well as a comparison of the Russian portrait with European art of the 18th – early 19th centuries.

Статья посвящена рассмотрению «Портрета О.К. Филипповой» – первого известного женского образа в творчестве Владимира Лукича Боровиковского (1757–1825). Целью исследования является определение отличительных черт художественной манеры и особенностей портретной характеристики в самом начале творчества мастера. Проблема истоков портретной концепции В.Л. Боровиковского требует сравнения с творчеством Ф.С. Рокотова: в научной литературе принято устанавливать преемственность между искусством рококо и сентиментализма на примере лучших портретистов этих эпох. Сопоставление «Портрета О.К. Филипповой» с самым знаменитым произведением Ф.С. Рокотова – «Портретом А.П. Струйской» – позволяет пересмотреть существующую традицию в историографии русского искусства XVIII столетия. Заметные различия присутствуют во всех значимых элементах портретной концепции Ф.С. Рокотова и В.Л. Боровиковского: типологические принципы, композиционные средства, живописные приемы и технические особенности. Этот вывод ставит под сомнение распространенный тезис о стилистической преемственности между рококо и сентиментализмом, что показывает необходимость дальнейшего исследования данного вопроса на более широкой выборке произведений.

The article is dedicated to the consideration of “Portrait of O.K. Filippova” – the first known female image in the art of Vladimir Lukich Borovikovsky (1757–1825). The object of the research is the definition of distinctive features in the artistic manner and principles of the portrait characteristic at the very beginning of the master's work. The problem of the portrait conception’s origins calls for comparison with the art of F.S. Rokotov: in the scientific literature it is customary to establish the continuity between rococo art and sentimentalism on the example of the best painters during these periods. The comparison of “Portrait of O.K. Filippova” with the most famous work of F.S. Rokotov – “Portrait of A.P. Struyskaya” – gives an opportunity to rethink the existing tradition in the historiography of Russian art of 18th century. Notable differences are present in all elements of portrait conception characteristic of both painters: typological principles, compositional means, painting devices and technical features. This conclusion casts doubt on the widespread thesis about the stylistic continuity between rococo and sentimentalism and demonstrates the need for further research on this issue on a wider sample of works.

Статья посвящена рассмотрению образа Варвары Николаевны Головиной (1766-1821), созданного М.-Э. Виже-Лебрен во время пребывания в России. «Портрет В.Н. Головиной» вызывает исследовательский интерес благодаря исключительному положению произведения в творчестве художницы. Изучение данного произведения позволяет проследить, как светотеневое решение, избранное художницей, определяет специфику портретной характеристики, которая отражает харизму и незаурядность самой модели. Эти особенности образа позволяют поставить вопрос о том, насколько представление женщины с сильным характером соответствует подходу М.-Э. Виже-Лебрен, который отличается сдержанностью портретных черт и светской привлекательностью облика.

The object of the article is the research of Varvara Nikolaevna Golovina’s image, created by E. Vigee Le Brun during her stay in Russia. The scientific interest in studying of «Portrait of V.N. Golovina» is founded on the exceptional role of the work in the art of French master. The review of this art piece gives a possibility to follow how the interpretation of chiaroscuro by the artist determines the peculiarity of portrait characteristic, which reflects the charisma and the originality of the model. Those features allow to raise the issue of the correspondence between the representation of woman with force of character and the vision of E. Vigee Le Brun, which is marked by the moderation of portrait traits and the social attraction of the image.

В статье рассматриваются два портрета Е. В. Скавронской, написанные М.-Э. Виже-Лебрен в 1790-е гг. Интерес к данным работам определяется большим временным промежутком (между 1790 и 1796 г.), а также местами их создания (Неаполь и Санкт-Петербург). Представление одной модели в разных обстоятельствах дает возможность рассмотреть роль интерьера в портретной концепции М.-Э. Виже-Лебрен. Большое мастерство художницы в отображении предметного мира обусловлено тщательным изучением фламандского и голландского искусства XVII в. (Рембрандт, П. Рубенс, А. Ван Дейк). Их влияние определяет как выразительность многих репрезентативных портретов М.-Э. Виже-Лебрен, так и успешность ее творческой манеры в разных национальных традициях. Внимательное изучение портретов, изображающих Е. В. Скавронскую, позволяет констатировать воздействие контекста создания произведения на художественное решение. Если первая картина отличается внешней естественностью изображения и неопределенностью портретной характеристики, то вторая обладает парадным эффектом, несмотря на выбор более скромного типа изображения (погрудный срез вместо представления модели в полный рост в первом случае). Заметное различие произведений демонстрирует влияние разных условий позирования на мироощущение модели: готовность к более сдержанному образу в соответствии с манерой мастера в заграничном путешествии и стремление к выраженной репрезентации — в знакомой обстановке. Автор приходит к выводу, что исполнение портрета у М.-Э. Виже-Лебрен в России обладает семиотическим характером, который обусловлен как высокой оценкой ее творчества, так и способностью отразить исключительность женской природы в соответствии с запросом заказчика.

The object of the study are two portraits of E.V. Skavronskaia, created by M.-E. Vigée le Brun in 1790s. A long period of time (1790 and 1796) and place of portraits’ execution (Naples and Saint-Petersburg) induced the research interest. The representation of one model in different circumstances gives an opportunity to consider the role of the interior in the portrait concept of M.-E. Vigée Le Brun. The great skill of the artist in displaying the material world is due to a thorough study of the 17th-century Flemish and Dutch art (Rembrandt, P. Rubens, A. van Dyck). This influence defines the expressiveness of many representative portraits by M.-E. Vigée Le Brun and the success of her style in different national traditions. A thorough study of the portraits depicting E.V. Skavronskaya, allowed us to state that the context of the work’s creation had influenced the artistic solution. If the first portrait is distinguished by the external naturalness of the image and uncertain portrait characteristics, the second one has a ceremonial effect despite the choice of a more modest type of image (chest image instead of representing the model in full length in the first case). A noticeable difference in the works demonstrates the influence of different posing conditions on the model’s attitude: readiness for a more reserved image in accordance with the style of the master while travelling abroad and desire to manifest splendour while being in familiar conditions. The author came to the conclusion that the execution of the portrait by M.-E. Vigée Le Brun in Russia has a semiotic character, which is due to both the high appreciation of her work and the ability to reflect the exclusivity of female nature corresponding the customer’s wish.

Статья посвящена рассмотрению женских портретов кисти М.-Э. Виже-Лебрен, изображающих мать с ребенком и созданных в России. Данная группа произведений представляет собой важное явление для понимания отечественной традиции семейного портрета – разновидности жанра, которая получает значительное развитие именно на рубеже XVIII-XIX веков при активном участии иностранных мастеров. Внимательное изучение портретов способствует выявлению их отличительных особенностей, к числу которых относятся тщательность в написании интерьера, нейтральность портретной характеристики и сдержанность проявления материнских чувств. Эти черты позволяют не только определить художественную специфику семейного портрета в творчестве М.-Э. Виже-Лебрен, но и понять значение произведений для заказчика. Для русских женщин того времени представление себя с ребенком являлось одной из форм репрезентативного портрета, который подчеркивал ее образ матери и тем самым предполагал возвеличивание модели, сочетая приемы парадного и камерного изображения.

The object of the article is the research of several Vigée Le Brun’s female portraits, presented the mother with child and created in Russia. This group of masterpieces constitutes an important phenomenon for the understanding of national tradition in a family portrait – a type of genre which markedly develops such at the turn of 18th-19th Century with active participation of foreign painters. A close examination of portraits contributes to the identification of specific features which included the thoroughness of interior’s depiction, the neutrality of portrait characteristic and the moderation in the display of maternal feelings. These features give an opportunity not only to determine an artistic expression of family portrait in the work of Vigee Le Brun, but also to understand a value of masterpieces for the client. For Russian women of the epoch the presentation of Self with a child became a type of revealing portrait which emphasized the image of mother and assumed the exaltation of a model by combining methods of ceremonial and chamber picture.

The two volumes are dedicated to Alessandra Contini Bonacossi by the Association "Archivio per la memoria e la scrittura delle donne", which bears her name since 2007. They include a biographical profile, enriched by the list of her numerous publications, followed by thirty-two essays written by scholars who shared with her ideals and cultural interests of research and study and writings of her family members who make up the “family album”. The collection, in addition to the variety of issues addressed in a wide chronological span - with essays ranging from the Middle Ages to the contemporary age - mainly focuses on the historiographical and interpretative reflection on documentary, iconographic, literary sources and themes such as Medici diplomacy, the Lorraine age, and gender history, to which Alessandra made important contributions with her studies.

The Church of St Stanislaus the Bishop and Martyr in Rome is the national church of Poland, where the funeral ceremonies of Polish rulers were celebrated. After the death of King John III Sobieski, ceremonial symbolic obsequies were held. Carlo Barberini, as cardinal protector of Poland, organized public and expensive ceremonies to properly honour the king's death. The course of the funeral service and the funeral decoration are known in detail through three contemporary printed reports and an engraving describing every aspect of the ceremony and the decoration of the church in honour of the Polish king. The church was decorated with six painted medallions celebrating important events in the life of King John III Sobieski. The surviving four of the six medallions are now kept at the Galleria Nazionale di Arte Antica in the Palazzo Barberini in Rome. In 2018, researcher Giovan Battista Fidanza found documents in the Barberini family archives regarding the cost of the ceremony. According to sources, the artist who made the six funerary oval paintings was Giacomo Wernele, which indicates an Italianization of the name Philip Jakob Wörndle.

Un fragment de porcelaine pâte tendre de Tournai provenant des fouilles de 2004-2006 à la Brunngasshalde à Berne a été examiné à l’aide de méthodes chimiques et minéralogiques. Il provient d’une assiette au décor bleu sous glaçure « au ronda » typique de Tournai. La composition chimique du tesson correspond bien à la recette riche en calcium (Ca) et en silicium (Si) transmise par cette manufacture de porcelaine. Minéralogiquement, la porcelaine est constituée de quartz, de tridymite et de wollastonite. Les cristaux sont logés dans une matrice vitreuse qui contient également des pores plus gros et fermés. La composition originale du mélange de glaçure alcalino-plombeuse ne peut être comparée à une recette de glaçure traditionnelle de 1780 que dans une mesure limitée, car les études micromorphologiques témoignent d’un échange chimique intense entre la glaçure liquide et le corps du tesson lors de la cuisson. Les compositions quantitatives des phases des porcelaines pâte tendre des manufactures d’Arras (FR), Tournai et Sèvres (FR), présentées ici pour la première fois, montrent que les deux premières utilisèrent des mélanges similaires, mais des procédés de fabrication quelque peu différents, contrairement à la manufacture royale de Sèvres, qui opérait avec des teneurs en flux plus élevées et de meilleures procédures techniques (par exemple préparation des matières premières, conduite de la cuisson, fours avec une meilleure répartition de la température). L'enquête montre de manière paradigmatique que la qualité d'une céramique dépend non seulement de la recette, mais aussi dans une large mesure de la qualité du processus de fabrication (y compris la cuisson).
